FOLLOWING their impressive performance at the recent 2026 IIEE Midyear National Convention Chess Tournament, the Philippine youth team from General Trias City, Cavite has shifted its full focus to its next mission — competing in an international chess competition.

With the support of Mayor Jon Jon Ferrer, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Porto Labuguen, and Congressman Ony Ferrer, the Philippine youth team from General Trias City, Cavite will once again raise the country’s colors at the upcoming 2nd Bangkok Summer International Chess Open. The event is scheduled from July 28 to August 2 at the Royal Benja Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, organized by Nick Cholapat Chongstitwattana of the Big Rook Chess Academy - Bangkok.

Heading the squad is Head Coach Ederwin Estavillo, who also serves as president of the General Trias City Chess Club.

“If we play with the same effort we showed during the IIEE Midyear National Convention Chess Tournament, I believe we can also deliver a strong performance at the international competition in Bangkok, Thailand,” said Coach Estavillo.

Leading the Philippine contingent are Bonjoure Fille Suyamin, Jirah Floravie Cutiyog, Maureinn Lepaopao, and Charly Jhon Yamson — all seasoned campaigners who previously represented the country at the 2024 FIDE World Cadet Championship in Montesilvano, Italy.

According to Coach Ederwin, other young athletes from General Trias who will carry the Philippine flag on the international stage include Jireh Dan Jaimie Cutiyog, Giecel Pacubat, Zyke Kean Atienza, Darvin Jace Manalo, Carl Christian Yamson, Stephen Von Estavillo, Gian Zain Estavillo Marisga, and Jewelle Iris Anacio.

Joining Coach Ederwin in Bangkok is Filipino and United States Chess Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., who will serve as assistant coach and media director for the team.

Looking back at their past success: during the 2018 Thailand Pattaya Youth Chess Championship held at the Bay Beach Resort Pattaya, Banglamung, Chonburi, Thailand from October 20 to 24, 2018, the Philippine youth team bagged four gold medals and two silver medals.

These young players from General Trias have also competed internationally in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
