United States Earns Eight Wins On Day Seven At Copa America
GIRARDOT, Colombia (May 24, 2026) – USA Boxing’s Elite High Performance Squad keeps rolling in Colombia as Edward Fonteneaux led this group to another eight-win day. The United States went 8-3 on day seven at the 2026 Copa America, which included seven 5-0 unanimous decision wins and one 4-1 split decision win.
Jayshannet Zapata (54 kilograms) kicked things off for the United States on day seven, securing her fourth victory of the event. Zapata earned her second straight 5-0 unanimous decision victory after the New York native defeated Jennifer Yool on Saturday. She improves to 4-2 in Colombia and will look for her fifth win on Sunday against Yerlin Quiñones in Bout 10 at approximately 5:15 p.m. ET.
Following Zapata, Jennifer Lozano (51 kilograms) continued her dominant run into Saturday as she earned another 5-0 unanimous decision victory after defeating Luz Mirabal. The 2024 Paris Olympian is now 6-0 at the 2026 Copa America event, as she has won three bouts by RSC and two by unanimous decision. Lozano will have Sunday off and will return to the ring on Monday.
Kendra Samargis (75 kilograms) improved her competition and international record to 2-0 after she defeated Luisa Fernanda Vasquez. Samargis has earned both her competition wins by unanimous decision. The Idaho native will have Sunday off and return to the ring on Monday.
As for the Men’s team, Moises Rodriguez (55 kilograms) was the first to enter the ring, and the Texas native remained undefeated through day seven with a 5-0 unanimous decision victory over Jose Daniel Felipe. Rodriguez has now won four straight bouts this event by unanimous decision, and improves his Copa America record to 5-0. Rodriguez will face Juan Guevara in Bout 19 at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET.
Shortly after Rodriguez, Tyric Trapp (80 kilograms) returned to the ring, and after a dominant second and third round, which included delivering an 8-count, the New Jersey native secured a 4-1 split decision win over Yeison Riascos. Trapp improves to 5-1 in Colombia and will have Sunday off.
Yahir Diaz-Martinez (60 kilograms) improved to 4-1 in Colombia after winning by a 5-0 unanimous decision over Johan Segura. Diaz-Martinez will return to the ring for the sixth time Sunday as he will face Leonardo Bermudes in Bout 24 at approximately 8:45 p.m. ET.
Concluding day seven for Team USA was USA Boxing’s Elite High Performance Squad’s super heavyweights, Nnajai Wright (90+ kilograms), and Gilbert Kabamba (90+ kilograms). Wright was the first of the two to compete, and the Virginia native earned a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Willys Mendoza. This marked Wright’s fourth win in Colombia, including his third unanimous decision victory. Wright is now 4-1 and will face Cristian Salcedo in Bout 40 at approximately 12:45 a.m. ET.
As for Kabamba, he remained undefeated with a 5-0 unanimous decision victory over Daniel Guzman. Kabamba improves to 6-0 and will enter the ring for the seventh time on Sunday against Andrew Salgado in Bout 37 at approximately 12:00 a.m. ET.
Also competing on Saturday were Deborah Grant (57 kilograms), Dustin Jimenez (65 kilograms), and Kentrell Rouser (70 kilograms). Grant, Jimenez, and Rouser each kept their bouts close, going the full three rounds, but came up short. Grant will have Sunday off while Jimenez and Rouser will return to the ring. Jimenez will face Anthony Ramirez in bout 28 at approximately 9:45 p.m. ET. Rouser enters the ring with Jose Gabriel Rodriguez in bout 31 at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET.
Sunday, Team USA will have nine boxers in action, as Alexis Proctor (60 kilograms) and Malachi Georges (90 kilograms) will return to the ring after the day off. Proctor will seek her second straight win as she will face Bexcy Benavides Bout 12 at approximately 5:45 p.m. ET, while Georges will enter the ring in Bout 5 at approximately 4:00 p.m. ET against Wilmer Rojas.
Throughout the competition at the 2026 Copa America, the United States will be led by USA Boxing National Development Coach Edward Fonteneaux (Fayetteville, N.C.), with assistance from Alex Love (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Billy Rafalko (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Jeffrey Nimo (Grand Prairie, Texas).
