Benilde Blazers wins Antipolo 2x2 chess team tournament

The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Blazers headed by Coach Jerich Cajeras, scored 9.0 match points to capture the crown in the Prof. Rene 'Boyet' Cadiz Memorial Chess Tournament 2x2 Tandem Average rating 2100 and below held at the VEST Shopping Center, Antipolo City on Sunday,May 24,2026.
The Benilde Blazers is composed of Board 1 Daniel Baylosis and Board 2 John Laurence Donguines.
They received the top prize of P20,000 , sponsored by United States chess master Manuel Costales Santos, and organized by Antipolo City Chess Logistics and Consulting Chess Club.
"I am really proud of the team," said Coach Cajeras.
Actually, Chessmatek (GM Darwin Laylo and Bob Jones Liwagon, Larry Team Dos (Samson "Chhiu Chhin) Lim III Vladimir Gonzales), and Team Blue Knights (FM Ivan Travis Cu and Narciso Gumila Jr.) also have 9.0 match points.
After the tie break points were applied, Benilde Blazers took the title while Chessmatek, Larry Team Dos and Team Blue Knights occupied 2nd to 4th spots.
According to Coach Cajeras, Benilde Blazers' campaign here is being supported by Sports Director/Taekwondo Legend and former Olympian Stephen Fernandez, Sports Coordinator Leonard Babiera ,and NCAA Mancom and Center for Sports Development Team head Dax Castellano.
It shall be recalled that the Benilde Blazers won last year's NCAA Senior Chess team tournament.-Marlon Bernardino-
