Marco Romero and John Brown.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (May 25, 2026) – The 2-year plan for blue-chip boxing prospect Marco “El Tiburón” Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) has been right on target and now it’s time for the 20-year-old Kansas super middleweight to sign a promotional contract.
In his most recent fight on May 16, Romero registered a first-round knockout, once again using his lethal body attack, against late replacement Andre Sherrod (5-4, 4 KOs), headlining “The Return,” presented by Kansas City Boxing Promotions, at Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri.
Romero has been offered contracts by many of boxing’s leading promoters and he is expected to make his decision to sign in June.
“I want to sign with a promoter that will see me succeed and grow, not only as an individual, but as a team,” Romero said. “My promoter must be able to bring me to the top because it’s where I belong.
“It’s time for me to get into the big leagues, so to speak, and gain exposure in bigger fights on larger platforms. I’m ready to show that it’s time for me to fight better opponents. My last performance speaks for itself – 45-second knockout win with a body blow. The late replacement, something that’s happened a lot, didn’t bother me. I just did my job.”
Romero’s longtime head trainer and manager, legendary John Brown, devised a plan with adviser Al Valenti, Marco and his parents. By his 21st birthday this November 19, the designed blueprint has him at 16-0 or so, fighting in 10 rounders, winning a regional title, and, of course, signed with a top promoter.
It’s close!
“We will soon be making an important decision for Marco’s future,” Brown explained. “This next step is to sign with a promoter – we’re fortunate to have a half-dozen solid offers – for him to climb to the top of the ladder. We didn’t want to rush him because he’s a 20-year-old kid. He’s got experience as a professional and now it’s time to take the next step. Boxing is in bad shape right now and not as fertile as it was only 5 years ago because there’s no TV money anymore. The whole scene is different, and nobody really knows the future.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t have a better-quality opponent, but the original opponent pulled out only a few days before the fight, and that was his second time. Marco did what he was supposed to do and stopped his opponent in the first round with a body shot. Marco will move on to fight tougher opponents and show fans his overall skill level and development on bigger platforms. Better days are ahead when we sign with a promoter.”
Romero was a sensational amateur boxer - 130-5 record and 23-time national champion – hasn’t lost a fight in nearly 7 years, since he dropped a split decision on June 28, 2019, at the National Junior Olympics. As a professional, Romero is unbeaten in 14 fights and he has only fought 35 rounds, but he has won each on all three judges’ scorecards.
