Cuban heavyweight Lenier Pero (13-0, 8KOs) kept his undefeated record intact as well as winning the WBA Continental champion after outpointing England’s Jordan Thompson (15-2, 12KOs) in a competitive ten-round main event Saturday night at the Caribe Royal in Orlando, Florida.
The judges awarded the fight to Pero via unanimous decision with scores of 97-93, 96-93, and 96-93.
The matchup was billed as a pivotal clash between two rising heavyweights, and it delivered action, particularly in the middle rounds. Pero, the slick southpaw, controlled the pace early, dictating the distance with his jab and landing sharp countershots. Thompson, known for his knockout power, struggled to close the distance and find a rhythm against the Cuban's defensive movement.
As the fight progressed into the second half, Thompson began to find success by aggressively walking Pero down and throwing heavy combinations, forcing the Cuban to fight off the ropes. Despite absorbing some punishing shots, Pero showed impressive conditioning, weathering the storms of the powerful Englishman.
In the championship rounds, Pero regained control, mixing his attack to the head and body and using lateral movement to frustrate Thompson. While Thompson never stopped pressing the action, Pero consistently landed the cleaner, more effective punches late in the fight, which proved decisive on the scorecards.
The victory marks a significant step forward for the 33-year-old Pero, demonstrating his ability to go deep into a fight and handle pressure against a quality, hard-hitting opponent. For Thompson, the loss is a setback, but his gritty performance against an Olympic-level talent shows he remains a threat in the heavyweight picture.
