
Antonio bounces back in Sydney International Open Chess Championship

Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. bested Candidate Master Tony Zheng of Australia Thursday night, April 9,2026 to bounce back on contention in the Sydney International Open Chess Championship at the Novotel Sydney West HQ in Sydney, Australia.
Playing black, Antonio prevailed in 47 moves of Bogo Indian defense.
His third win and a loss gave the 13 -Time Philippine Open Champion Antonio 3.0 points.
"I hope to do well in this event and gain some Elo rating points," said the 64-year-old Antonio, who won the gold medal in the 2025 World Senior Blitz Chess Championship in Gallipoli, Italy and a silver medal in the 2025 Thailand Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Earlier, Antonio yielded to International Master Aleksandr Domalchuk-Jonasson of Australia in the third round.
Antonio opened his campaign on a bright note, by defeating Antonio Daniel Arvola of Norway in the first round and Grandmaster Azer Mirzoev of Azerbaijan in the second round.
After the Sydney International Open, Antonio is scheduled to compete in the Melbourne International Open from April 14-19, 2026.
Antonio's participation is being supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by chairman/president Cong. Prospero Pichay Jr.; the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chaired by Alejandro Tengco; Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick Gregorio; Senator Bong Go; Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III; Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita 'Menchie' Aguilar- Abalos, Vice Mayor Anthony Suva, Congw. Queenie Gonzales, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte -Alimurung; Vice Mayor Gian Sotto; Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Tereso Panga; and Mr. Alvin Chu Teng of Cellboy.
The Australian chess circuit campaign is a part of the preparation of Antonio who is scheduled to represent the country in the FIDE World Senior Chess Championships on November 2-15 in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia. (Marlon Bernardino)
