Nine-year-old child prodigy Rensel Matthew Bacuyag ruled anew the Canadian Chess Challenge Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Final 2026 held at Rennies River Elementary, St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Bacuyag, an online FIDE Master, bested all his opponents to retain his title.

"I am happy with my performance," said Bacuyag, a Grade 4 student of Hazelwood Elementary School.

He beat Thomas Kearsey in the first round, Danylo Litvin in the second round, Fijinoluwa Oluwatosin in the third round, Aimee Wang in the fourth round and Tony Quang in the fifth round.

Bacuyag, whose roots is from Lal-Lo, Cagayan is in a rigid training under the watchful eye of Coach FIDE Master Noel dela Cruz for the nationals this May in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.

He also represent St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador during the 2025 finals in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

His supporting father, Roselle Bacuyag had something to say to his son:

"Congratulations to our son, Arena Fide Master Rensel Matthew Bacuyag, for winning the NL Provincial Chess Championship at the grade 4 level for 2 consecutive years with a perfect score of 5-0. He will represent the province at the nationals this May 2026 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of talent. Thank you to all past coaches and his present coach, Fide Master Noel Dela Cruz.
See you at the nationals." Said Roselle. (Marlon Bernardino)
