Sherwin Tiu captures Kamatyas Open Chess crown

Sherwin Tiu held FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri to a draw in the final round to rule the 19th Edition of the Kamatyas Rapid Open Chess Tournament at the Vista Mall, Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Tiu thus finished the seven-round tournament with 6.5 points on six victories and one draw, the same output of FM Nouri and International Master Mark Jay Bacojo.

After the tie break were applied, Tiu took the title plus the top prize of P30,000, FM Nouri wound up second to earn P10,000 while IM Bacojo settled for third to receive P7,000.

Tiu won six straight against Yaneah Sofia Morada, Jorge Delgado Jr., Emmanuel Barbosa, Grandmaster Daniel Quizon, Kevin Arquero and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia before halving the point with FM Nouri in the last round.

"I am very happy with my performance tonight," said Tiu.

The 1-day 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment rapid time control format, was jointly organized by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol Jr. of Kamatyas Chess Club.

FM Narquingden Reyes, IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, IM Ronald Dableo, and FM Christian Mark Daluz finished the tournament with similar 6.0 points while GM Daniel Quizon, NM Jaymiel Piel, Ariel Santander, Marc Kevin Labog and WNM Lexie Grace Hernandez and Lourecel Ecot have identical 5.5 points.

Meanwhile, Earl Nygel Cabalhin edged fellow six pointer Nhiel Anthon Jacinto in the tie break points to clinch the kiddies title.

"The event aimed at developing good thinkers through the understanding of chess strategies and tactics, improving the logical abilities and rational thinking and reasoning of the participants, and instilling a sense of self-confidence, self-worth and camaraderie," said IM Roderick Nava.
