Two six-foot-tall Mexican world champions, David “Red Flag” Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) and Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs), met at the WBC's traditional "Coffee Tuesdays" at the Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City to promote their mega-fight on May 2nd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, coinciding with the traditional Mexican Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
Benavidez, 29, the current WBC light heavyweight world champion, requested and received permission to challenge the 34-year-old Zurdo Ramirez for the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles.
For this grand night of boxing, the WBC commissioned a special commemorative belt, the Tollan Tlatequi Belt, which the winner will raise.
Benavidez is a former WBC super middleweight champion and the current WBC light heavyweight champion, while Ramirez is a former WBO super middleweight champion and currently holds the WBO and WBA cruiserweight titles.

“I’m very happy with everything that’s happened in my life. Sometimes, the toughest lessons I had to learn were the ones that made me stronger. I’m proud of my accomplishments, but I don’t like to dwell on the past or get stuck in it, because there’s still so much more I can achieve. And when my boxing career is over, there will always be room to do more. I’m a huge boxing fan. I’m always studying, trying to be the best, and I can still learn. When you tell yourself you’ve learned everything about boxing, that’s when you’re finished. But there are many things I’m still learning, and that allows me to get better with every fight.” Benavidez said
“Benavidez is an excellent boxer, and it will be a great fight between us. The cruiserweight division, which is 25 pounds heavier and where I feel comfortable, will be an advantage for me in terms of power. I've been training in the United States for this fight, and I've been working very hard. For me, the secret to success will be the timing of my punches. At the end of this fight,” said Ramirez.
Mauricio Sulaimán presented a mini WBC championship belt to David's son, Anthony Benavidez, along with a jacket and boxing gloves. He also presented Zurdo with green and gold belts for each of his two sons.
What a great event the WBC will have. As Carly Simon once sang:
“Nobody does it better.”
