ONE HUNDRED fifty-three swimmers completed the Davao-Samal-Davao Cross Channel last March 8 at Cuaco Beach in Lanang, as part of the celebration of the 89th Araw ng Dabaw 2026.

“Through the coordinated efforts of all deployed personnel and partner agencies, the activity concluded successfully with zero maritime casualties recorded,” said race director Dennes Cubelo.

Thirty-seven sea marshals took part in the open-water swimming event which started at 6 a.m. and ended at 8 a.m.

Philippine Coast Guard deployed 34 personnel with 28 from Coast Guard Station Davao assigned to the Incident Command Post, Sea Marshall/Lifeguard Teams, and four from Ground Security.

Four from the Medical Service Clinic – Southeastern Mindanao (MEDC-SEM) and two photographers from the District Public Affairs Office were also added.

Floating assets deployed included RHIBs from Coast Guard Station Davao, rubber boats from Special Operations Group-Southeastern Mindanao for immediate rescue response, and BRP Malamawi which conducted maritime security patrols during the event.

Additionally, DMAX and PTV ambulances were placed on standby for possible medical emergencies.

The event also utilized 32 Outboard Motor Bancas provided by the organizers, with most rented by family members of the participants to monitor and support swimmers along the route.

The Coast Guard Station Davao remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives at sea while supporting community events that promote sportsmanship, tourism, and public engagement during celebrations.

The event was organized by the Snakehead Swimming Club and Snakehead Tri Team as part of the 89th Arawng Dabaw 2026 Celebration in coordination with the Sports Development Division.

“We were able to provide a well-organized and meaningful event for everyone,” said Cubelo.
