GM Antonio to compete in P100,000 top prize Rapid chessfest this Sunday in Roxas City, Capiz Province

Thirteen-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. is set to compete in the Touchmove Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament, scheduled for August 24, Sunday at the atrium of SM City Mall in Roxas City, Capiz Province.

"I would like to thank sportsman Eduardo Basilonia for inviting me to this tournament," Antonio said. "I'm hoping to perform well."

The tournament will commence at 9 AM and will feature a time limit of fifteen minutes per player, with a 3-second increment. It will utilize a seven-round Swiss system format.

The participating invited grandmasters are Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez and Daniel Quizon.

Others playing are IMs Ronald Dableo, Ricardo de Guzman, Hamed Nouri, Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Angelo Young and Jose Efren Bagamasbad, FMs Christian Gian Karlo Arca, David Elorta, Alekhine Nouri, Roel Abelgas and Mark Jay Bacojo.

A guaranteed top cash prize of P100,000 for the winner.

GM Antonio is an active competitor, most recently winning the blitz section of the 2025 Chinese Taipei Chess Association International Open in July 2025. He also won a Philippine Daily Online Tournament and won the Battle of Champions at Asenso Ozamiz Chess Festival.

His upcoming major competition is the FIDE World Seniors Chess Championships from October 20 to November 2, 2025 in Gallipoli Le, Italy.

His Italy chess campaign is being supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by its' chairman/president Prospero A. Pichay Jr. and CEO/Executive Director GM Jayson O. Gonzales, Philippine Sports Commission Chairman John Patrick "Pato" Gregorio, Commissioner Ed Hayco and Commissioner Olivia "Bong" Coo and Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino.-Marlon Bernardino-
