It was a scene that stirred up equal parts nostalgia and intrigue as boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios came face to face at their official press conference ahead of their July 19 showdown at the MGM Grand. With flashing cameras and a packed media presence, the event marked the formal kickoff to what is being billed as one of the most compelling generational clashes in recent boxing memory.
The moment Pacquiao stepped on stage, the crowd erupted in familiar cheers for the 46-year-old Filipino icon, who is coming out of a near four-year retirement to challenge for world honors once more. His opponent, the 28-year-old Barrios, stood calmly by his side—taller, younger, and with a point to prove. The size difference between the two was immediately apparent, but Pacquiao brushed off any concerns with a wry smile and a confident declaration: "I've seen this before."
Pacquiao: “I Have to Punish Myself Again”
With his characteristic humility and fire, Pacquiao acknowledged the magnitude of his comeback—and the challenge that lies ahead. “I have to punish myself again,” he said with a chuckle, referring to the intense training camp he has subjected himself to in preparation. “This is not an exhibition. I’m not doing this for fun. I’m going to fight a real champion, a real warrior, and I have to be ready for war.”
Despite his age and long layoff, Pacquiao dismissed any notions that he was taking the fight lightly or returning for nostalgic fanfare. “If I didn’t believe I could win, I wouldn’t be here,” he said, adding that he was motivated not only by the belt but also by the thrill of competition. “Fighting is my passion. It’s in my blood.”
Barrios: “I’m Not Here to Play the Legend’s Game”
Barrios, calm and composed, showed respect for Pacquiao’s legacy but made it clear he wasn’t showing up to play the supporting role in someone else’s comeback story. “This is the biggest fight of my career, but I’m not here to be part of a farewell tour,” Barrios said. “Manny is a legend, but I’m the champion now. I’ve earned this belt, and I plan on keeping it.”
He acknowledged Pacquiao’s speed and experience but also emphasized that times have changed. “He’s done amazing things, but this is my time. I’m stronger, I’m sharper, and I’m going to show it.”
