Cavite Spartans secure back to back wins in PCAP Chess tourney

City of General Trias, Cavite Spartans scored back to back wins after beating Rizal Batch Towers, 12.5-8.5, in the third match of the All Filipino Conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) in the online tournament Wednesday night, January 20, 2021 at the lichess platform.

Arena Grandmaster Marc Voltaire Paraguya halved the point with International Master Rolando Nolte, who took the place of Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre, in both blitz and rapid to lead the Cavite Spartans' campaign against the Batch Towers of former NCFP director Ed Madrid.

Also scoring for Cavite Spartans backed up by Mayor Ony Ferrer and Rep. Jon-Jon Ferrer, are Kevin Arquero, who beat Fide Master Mari Joseph Turqueza, 3-1, on board two; Clairevy Estavillo - Marisga, who blanked Enrica Villa, 3-0, on board three (female); and Jayson San Jose Visca, who routed Marlon Constantino, 3-0, on board six.

Other notable winners for Cavite Spartans headed by Team Owner Lhen Muralla Kempiz and Head Coach Ederwin Estavillo are International Master Petronio Roca against Salvador "Boyet" Tardecilla on board four (senior) in blitz and Israel Landicho against National Master Robert Arellano on board five in rapid.
Tardecilla, on the other hand won his game against Ceferino "Jun" Isaac Jr. in rapid, and Arellano against Landicho in blitz.

Arena Grandmaster Herman Vallente of Rizal Batch Towers, meanwhile subdued Ricardo Batcho, 3-0, on board seven.
Earlier, Cavite Spartans bannered by Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Kevin Arquero, demolished the Quezon City Simba's Tribe of International Master Oliver Dimakiling and National Master Edgardo Garma, 15.5-4.5, in the second match Wednesday night.

It shall be recalled that Grandmaster Julio Catalino Sadorra, International Master John Marvin Miciano and International Master Cris Ramayrat provided the victories in the three Armageddon matches to clinch the win for the Manila Indios Bravos over the Cavite Spartans last Saturday at the start of the 2021 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) First Conference.

Sadorra nipped Arquero, Miciano toppled Batcho and Ramayrat crushed Visca. The match ended at 10.5-10.5 in regulation.
Meanwhile, the Cinderella story of Cagayan Kings was halted. After edging Pasig King Pirates, 11-10, in the opener, Cagayan Kings yielded to Antipolo Cobras, 12-9, and San Juan Predators, 17-4, respectively.

Based on the scoring system, a win in rapid chess is worth two points, a draw is one point and a loss is zero. Blitz chess result gives one point for a win, half point for a draw and zero for a loss.

The tournament is being sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra and supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
