FILIPINO chess wizard Jayson Jacobo Tiburcio bagged the Silver Medal in the 2018 CAP International Youth Chess Open Championships held in Taoyuan City in Chinese-Taipei on Thursday, August 16, 2018.
The nine-years-old Jayson, who hails from Marikina City, scored 7.5 points on seven wins, one draw and one loss in the nine-round tournament organized by the Chinese-Taipei Chess Association in the 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment standard time control format, open to all players ages 11 years old and below.
He won over Li Zi Hong of Chinese-Taipei in the first round, Kuo Chen Yu of Chinese-Taipei in the second round, Shan Yinghan of China in the fourth round, Yu Jian Sia of Chinese-Taipei in the sixth round, Wang Yu Sen of Chinese-Taipei in the seventh round, Andy Cheng Cheng Chien of Chinese-Taipei in the eight round and Ji Yu Lun of Chinese-Taipei in the ninth and final round.
He drew with Lin Wun Jie of Chinese-Taipei in the third round but was yielded to eventual champion Qin Xinzhe of China in the fifth round.
Qin Xinzhe copped the title with 8.5 points on eight wins and one draw. Yu Jian Sia of Chinese-Taipei won the brone medal with 7.0 points.
His father, Jaime "Bong" Tiburcio is more proud with His son (Jayson) latest award according to very supportive mother Mary Jane "MaJane" Jacobo Tiburcio.
Among Jayson's chess coaches and trainers are eight-times olympiad member International Master Rico Yap Mascarinas, Arena Grandmaster and Fide Master elect Roberto Suelo Jr., Christopher Diaz, International Master elect Edgar Reggie Olay, International Arbiter Lincoln "Linky" Yap, International Arbiter Joey Moseros, Jimson Bitoon, Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
Jayson, a Primary 4 pupil of Fernvale Primary School in Singapore, earlier wins in two International Chess Competitions.
He got 6.5 points out of 7 games of play to emerge as Champion in the July edition of Asean Chess Academy (ACA) Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre in Singapore last July 22, 2018.
He also won the Silver Medal in the 12th Nanyang Chess Challenge (Rapid Format) Upper Primary Division last July 21, 2018 held in Nanyang Primary School in Singapore.
He was also the only recipient of the Special Award on Fairplay in the Upper Primary Boy's Category. This award was given to the player who demonstrated good behavior and sportsmanship in the entire tournament according to his very supportive mother Mary Jane "MaJane" Jacobo Tiburcio.-Marlon Bernardino-
