REY Jan Palen, the lone boxer from Siargao Island, bagged the silver medal in the Junior Boys [57-60kg] in the finals of the Batang Pinoy amateur boxing held recently at the Oval Plaza court in General Santos City.

Palen, who is mentored by Coach Lorenz Michael Romarate, did not fight already during the final because of high fever.

“The boy might have an accident. Silver is ok already for first timers,” said Romarate.

Kadgie Angelo Aninao of Bohol automatically won the gold.

Cyril Joshua Revilla of Tacurong and Rhojan Carl Rara of Mandaue settled for the bronze medals.

Romarate said the intensive preparations have paid off.

“Palen stayed with me at the house in Siargao for nine months with only schooling and boxing,” said Romarate.

It was only Palen who brought home a medal while the other three boxers - Reyjan Pale, Kerwin Danias and Perwin Sabote under coach Rerie Munez from Surigao del Norte all bowed out.

“I hope next year we’ll have many boxers,” said Romarate.

Next year’s Batang Pinoy will be held in Bacolod.
