Filipino Edgar Reggie Olay wins 4th Singapore chess title; tops Rapid Chess Championships

SINGAPORE---Filipino International Master (IM) elect Edgar Reggie Olay continued his winning streak after beating Malaysian Lim Chin Lee in the ninth and final round to rule the 30th (Singapore) National Rapid Chess Championships 2018 Open Division.

Tha Davao City and Kidapawan City pride Olay prevailed on August 12, 2018, Sunday at the Bukit Merah Community Club in Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore here.

Olay, a chess instructor here finished with 8 points in nine outings in the 15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment time control format in the event organized by the Singapore Chess Federation with tournament director is International Organizer (IO) Thomas Hoe while International Arbiter (IA) Nisban Jasmin served as Chief Arbiter.

He beat Joel Yi Herng Ong of Singapore in the first round, Candidate Master (CM) Lee Jun Wei of Singapore in the second round, International Master (IM) Zhen Yu Cyrus Low of Singapore in the third round, Kirill Surin of Belarus in the fourth round, Fide Master (FM) Qing Aun Lee of Singapore in the sixth round, Fide Master Fernandez Gervasio Calderon of Argentina in the seventh round, International Master Enrique Paciencia of the Philippines in the eight round before beating Lim Chin Lee of Malaysia in the final canto. His only setback at the hands of countryman Grandmaster (GM) Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor in the fifth round.

It was Olay's 4th straight title in Singapore following his triumphs in the (Singapore) National Blitz Chess Championships 2018 Open Division, three minutes plus two seconds increment time control format (August 11, 2018), the Nanyang Racial Harmony Chess Team Challenge 2018 Open division held at the Nanyang Community Club (July 29, 2018) and the July edition of the Asean Chess Academy Rapid Open Chess Championships being held at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre (July 7, 2018).

Former Barangay Malamig Rizal Technological University Chess Team varsity player Ronnie Tamares congratulated Olay for winning the (Singapore) National Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships 2018 Open Division.

"I extend my congratulations to International Master (IM) elect Edgar Reggie Olay for winning the (Singapore) National Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships 2018 Open Division held at the Bukit Merah Community Club in Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore here," Tamares said who personally visit Olay on Sunday.(Marlon Bernardino)
