
Quizon, Mordido earn GM and WGM norm, rule Eastern Asia Juniors Open Chess Championships

DANIEL Quizon and Kylen Joy Mordido, both member of the star-studded Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines Chess Team lived up to their top billing as they dominated to claim their coveted gold medals plus the elusive first Grandmaster norm and Woman Grandmaster norm and an outright International Master title and Woman International Master title, respectively in the Eastern Asia Juniors Open Chess Championships 2018 held at the Gangneung University in South Korea from August 2-8, 2018.
Quizon, 13, won his last three games to en route the boy's division title while Mordido, 16 scored 6.5 points to capture the girls category in the Standard play, 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment time control format.
The undefeated Quizon tallied 7.5 points in nine games of play, the same score of Hongjin Anh of South Korea, whom he beat in the tie break points. His crucial wins against Fide Master (FM) Azarya Jodi Setyaki of Indonesia in the seventh round, Fide Master (FM) Erdene Baansansuren of Mongolia in the eight round and Candidate Master (CM) Taehyung Kang of South Korea in the ninth and final round.
Mordido, on the other hand, was also undefeated in seven games of play with six wins and a draw in the third round against Woman Fide Master (WFM) Nguyen Thi Minh Oanh of Vietnam.
