Jerwin Ancajas Clinches LuzProBa Title in Lucena City

Super flyweight rising-star Jerwin Ancajas of Davao del Norte needed four rounds to overpower Leyte?o Armando "Muscle Man" Casa to capture the vacant Luzon Professional Boxing Association (LuzProBA) bantamweight title last night at Lucena Convention Center in Quezon Province, Philippines.

From the first bell, the 21 year-old Ancajas (17-1-1, 9 KO's) took control of the battle, scoring the damaging blows that prompted the demise of his opponent at the 59-second mark in round four. The referee was Mr. Sammy Bernabe of Cavite.

In the co-main event, heavy-favorite Lolito "Thunder Shot" Sonsona (16-1-4, 6 KOs) of Gensan and unheralded Albert Alcoy (14-16-6, 4 KOs) of Muntinlupa in Metro Manila fought to a majority draw, leaving the LuzProba super flyweight (115 lbs) belt vacant.

Scorecards were: judge Fernando Batistil 78-74 in favor of Alcoy, while judges Sammy Bernabe and Tomeldan saw the fight 76-76.

Also, in an intense flyweight battle, hard-hitting Cebuano Aston "Mighty" Palicte (11-1, 9 KO's) scored a third round knock out over Leyte?o Lowell Saguisa (7-13, 3 KO's).

Moreover, Bohole?o Antonio "Kangaroo" Melencion (1-3-1 ) scored his first victory as a pro fighter by outpointing debutant Roberto Sta Ana (0-1, 0 KO's). "Kangaroo" won the clash by unanimous decision.

In the first rumble of the evening, mnimumweights Jhon Jhon Faminiano (2-8-1) of Laguna and Aprilito Agcopra (0-1-1, 0 KO's) ended their hard-fought 4-rounder in a majority draw.

Scores were judge Jerrold Tomeldan 39-37 for Faminino, while judges: Jojo Torres and Virgilio Garcia saw the fight 38-38.

The exciting card, billed as ?Bigwas at Lakas Ng Quezon? was a production of promoters Joel O. Ostria of SBS Boxing Promotion and Joven H. Jimenez of Joven Sports Promotion in association with GMA Channel 7.
