Largo wins Malaysian chessfest title by half point

BENGT LARGO drew with compatriot Carlo Lorena in the ninth round and won the tournament by half point in the AMBANK Amateur Open 10th IGB Malaysian Chess Festival 2013 held recently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Iligan City native Largo finished the tournament with 8 points.

The Daraga, Albay bet national master Lorena followed at second place via tie-break over Tan Eng Seong of Malaysia, both tallied 7.5 points, apiece.

Marvin Ting of Bacolod City scored 6.0 points but a better tie-break score placed him at 12th spot, while Isidro Gallon of Manila landed at 16th place in the 103 player's field.

National Master Leonardo Alidani of Aloguinsan, Cebu finished at 21st place with 5.5 points, the same score of 24th place Perpetuo Tan Jr. of Pambujan, Northern Samar and 28th place Romelin Guerra Nava of Marikina City.

Other Filipino pawnpushers seeing in action are 52nd place current world youngest Fide Master Alekhine Nouri of Taguig City (4.5 points) and 66th place Christine Joyce Dacayo Paragua (wife of GM Mark Callano Paragua, 4.0 points).

In the Senior's division, National Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of Talisay, Camarines Norte was tied at 2nd to 3rd place with IM Jimmy Liew of Malaysia after tallying identical 6.5 points each. Grandmaster Dmitry Kayumov of Uzbekistan took the title with 7.5 points. -Marlon Bernardino-
