Filipino woodpushers bag gold, silver, bronze medals at Asian Youth chess meet in Sri Lanka

Filipino woodpushers won one gold, silver and bronze medals in the rapid competition of the 2012 Asian Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka over the weekend.

"We won gold, silver and bronze medals at the rapid competition of the 2012 Asian Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka." said former Olympian Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Executive Director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under the leadership of it's Chairman/President Prospero ?Butch? Pichay Jr. and Secretary-General Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr.

Shania Mae Mendoza of Sta. Rosa, Laguna settled for a truce in the last two round to finished undefeated with a total score of 6.0 points on account of five wins and two draws in seven outings to enroute the gold medal in the Under 14 Girls category.

Mendoza halved the point with Shiny Das of India in the sixth and Tan Li Ting of Malaysia in the seventh round, respectively. She earlier beat Gunawardena Piyumi of Sri.Lanka, WFM Monnisha Gk of India, Peng Xinbei of China, Ashwini U of India and WFM Vu Thi Dieu Ai of Vietnam in the first five round.

Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Pandacan, Manila tallied 5.5 points after seven games of play to create a four-way tie for first place in the Under 10 Boys category in the company of eventual champion FM Nguyen Anh Khoi of Vietnam, third place Thilakarathne G M H of Sri Lanka and fourth place FM Ram Aravind L N of India. Pangilinan ended up second place after the bucholz tie break points was applied to settled for silver medal.

Justin Mordido of Las Pinas City defeated Ganzorig Amartuvshin of Mongolia in the seventh and final round to score 5.0 points and bag the bronze medal.

Nguyen Huynh Minh Thien (6.5 points out of 7 games of play) and Ngo Duc Tri (6.0 points) took the gold and silver medal, in order for the Vietnamese domination in the Under 8 Boys category.

The Filipinos' chess campaign is supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero ?Butch? Pichay Jr., Secretary-General Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr., Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Ricardo "Ritchie" Garcia, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr., Sta. Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas and City sports Development Officer at City of Santa Rosa Dennis Queano Aquino.

International Arbiter Casto "Toti" Abundo is the chief arbiter in the said event organized by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and sanctioned by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
