GAB WELCOMES WOMEN PROFESSIONAL BOXERS

The long awaited moment to end the gender issue of allowing Filipino women to the fold of professional boxing has come. Effective this month of July 2006,the Games and Amusements Board announces its newest professional sports innovative policy for the issuance of licenses to all Filipinas who are interested to become fighters of the ring. The agency’s Board instructed Dr. Nasser V. Cruz, acting chief of its boxing division to effect the campaign to promote and strongly develop various promotions involving legitimate and trained women boxers to engage in future scheduled fight cards here and in the regional level. But the main target of course is, to produce world class Filipina boxers worthy to compete in the international arena in a year or two. Conclusively, it is now legal to sanction and conduct several women fight promotions in the Philippines.
Although we have acted to legalize this women boxing as early as February this year, however, it took the incumbency of this Board to create the necessary separate rules for women boxing. Also, we have reconstructed the boxing division itself by putting-up a section that would only cater to the needs and progress of this, now as a matter of global concern. Not only that we have realized, but in essence, professional women boxing is now becoming a trend in the global sporting arena.
Along with the accreditation and legalization of MuayThai as one of the newest calendar of pro sporting aspects to be regulated and supervised by the GAB, we strongly believe that the evolution of women boxing will be more beneficial to our country. And needless to say, the brighter future of these Filipino women boxers is real and something that is within reach. Expectedly, the agency as a pro sports portfolio under the Office of the President is hoping that we can better generate the support of all the existing boxing stables and promoters in the entire country as we consider them co-partners in trying to further enhance the nation’s agenda in building more and more champions towards achieving our goal for consistently winning such prestigious global recognition. Undoubtedly, we will and must do it. We must be proud being Filipinos being highly regarded and well-respected in the world ever since via this leading sport , Boxing.
Our earlier analysis is that, hundreds if not in thousands are currently and have been training in various pro boxing stables in the Philippines who are set to be registered and licensed within the last two remaining quarters of this fiscal year. “ Opening the women professional boxing in the country is just like opening the floodgate of golden opportunity for our Filipina boxers” Chairman Eric R. Buhain was quoted to have stated during the recent board meeting. Let us help one another in paving the way for its success and would be contribution to the development of the entire sporting programs of the national government. Personally, I, with the unconditional support of this Board fathered the realization of this one being the appointed WIBA Commissioner to the Philippines. I do not want to grab any credit nor interest of establishing a foot print in history. Rather and honestly, I want to see in the soonest time possible a Filipina version of “Manny Pacquiao” to be rallied and cheered by our compatriots in the Las Vegas arena. This is not long overdue on the part of the Philippines. In fact we are in time since professional women boxing, though fast growing is just recent in the scene.
