The grand celebration of the Annual Elorde Awards Night better known as the "Banquet of Champions" this year is scheduled on March 25, 2006 at the five-star Dusit Nikko Hotel in Makati City. This much-awaited yearly affair is in honor of the late boxing legend and former world champion Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde.

Chairman of the Games and Amusements Board Eric Buhain will honor the special invitation by gracing this momentous event together with all the Filipino boxing champions from the national, regional, international to world champions .

Indeed, the main purpose of the organizer is mainly to recognize the people who are actively involved in pro boxing who have had earned meritorious and exemplary performances in the field. I got my own invitation. Commissioner Angel P. Bautista too is invited along with the top technical people of the GAB headed by Mr.Emmanuel Flores, the chief of our Boxing Division.

Last year's awards night I also attended representing the good Chairman. Senator Manuel Roxas was the guest of honor and speaker, while Manny Pacquiao and Carlos Ortiz were cited as the top awardees.I saw Manny there, and even gave him the advice to continue pursuing his quest to have a rematch with Erik Morales of Mexico. That was March 30 last year of 2005 where Manny lost to Morales earlier in their scheduled fight in las Vegas on the 23rd of the same month. Manny coyly smiled and I recalled he was saying to me, "Opo, matutuloy po yan at talagang kukunin ko ang laban next time po". And he did it impressively last January.

In this Hotel Nikko Night of the Champions on the 25th, I expect full attendance of top calibered Filipino great fighters. The presence of big-time promoters, well-known managers, referee-judges and other officials of the government are already in the bag. Buhain will speak and will enjoin everyone to support the upcoming 1st GAB Philippine Annual Boxing Convention to take place in the City of Manila this April 18-21st, 2006.

The good Chairman may also even discuss before the audience the role of this agency in combatting all forms of irregularities in the conduct of pro sports, the main policy of this incumbent Board to get rid of unscrupulous individuals who are making mockery of the rules and system, and most of all the seriousness of the national government and the agenda of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to enhance the development of professional boxing in this nation in furtherance to our continuing campaign to achieve more and more global recognition.

Producing world class boxers and more champions and consistently putting the Philippines before the map of international boxing community is but the main thrust of the GAB and the Arroyo administration now.

This is one opportunity for all of us to rub elbows and see each other on the 25th. "The event in itself deserves utmost support both from the government and the whole boxing community," Buhain stressed referring to the yearly Elorde Awards Night.

Thanks to Johnny Elorde and to his lovely wife Liza for personally visiting our office to extend the invitation. Definitely, we will be attending the night being proud to accompany our dynamic Chairman Eric R.Buhain. See you there , friends and boxing fanatics!
