The tremendous display of Rodel Mayol's scientific and mastery of punches in solid combinations became another milestone of our country in the arena of global competition. His remarkable performance of putting away Lorenzo Trejo of Mexico at exactly 2 minute and 29 seconds in the fourth round of their scheduled 12-round WBC strawweight championship eliminator before a jampacked crowd at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico last January 28th at 8:30 p.m. Mexican time, proved that the Philippines is now regaining its strength and power in pro boxing in the world.

Chairman Eric R. Buhain of the Games and Amusements Board who was there right where the action was, called up this writer and in a very exciting tone said "people all over the world who see the fight regards our great fighters as scientifically trained and having advanced technique in boxing". Buhain, who was attending the WBC Night of Champions in Cancun, Mexico gave so much moral support by his pressence to Mayol whom he predicts to be "the next Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines".

GAB records will show that the victory garnered by Rodel Mayol over a Mexican fighter is at PAR with that of the Pacquiao-Morales fight last January 22, 2006 in Las Vegas where the Filipino Champion won the WBC world title fight eliminator agains "El Terrible" Morales of Tijauna, Mexico.

According to Chairman Buhain, Eagle Kyowa of Japan, the reigning champion of the WBC strawweight division will be scheduled to fight against our very own Mayol this year. And if given the best of timing and opportunity, we will be having again another senasational boxing champ in the person of Rodel Mayol. The only difference between the Pacman-Morales and the Mayol-Trejo fights is the magnitude of publicity.

The year of the dog in the Chinese oriental calendar is perceived to be a great year for the Philippine professional boxing. Timely to note also, aside from the impact of euphoria gained out of these winnings, we have in the GAB as an agency under the Office of the President, the best of preparation to do more for the enhancement and promotion of this now leading sport in the country. That is, the 1st GAB Philippine Boxing Convention this coming 18-21 of April, 2006 here in the Philippines.

We will be giving awards and recognitions to our world champions and showcasing to the whole world the best among our Filipino great fighters of the ring. And probably, with the City of Manila under Lito Atienza as our co-partner here in the said big event, we can assure to provide our future generations of pro boxers a better place not only for their careers but in the history as well. We are hoping that by pump priming our resources and potentials, the Philippines will remain respected and highly regarded as one of the best haven of professional boxing in the world.
