Las Vegas, NV--In the rematch of the fight of the year, Juan Manuel Marquez proved that even at 37, he still has a lot left in the tank as he won a clear unanimous decision over Juan Diaz. Early in the fight, Marquez was effectively landing crisp combinations. Diaz, who was in full attack mode in the first, back off more and tried to circle Marquez. That proved not to be a good game-plan for Diaz because he was down on points early and was stunned quite a few times. Diaz was in full survival mode from rounds 6 to 10.
Diaz tried to rally in the last two rounds as Marquez, knowing he was way ahead, started to get tired. But Marquez was able to fend off the attack and finish the fight. Not as exciting as the first fight, but it was overall a good boxing match. The official scores after 12 rounds were 116-112, 118-110, and 117-111; all for Marquez. Marquez retains his WBA and WBO lightweight title. A full recap will follow.
