A major first

"Those who do not believe things can be done, should allow enough room for those who are willing to do things."

As the end of the last quarter of 2005 approaches, the Games and Amusements Board is now to begin the herculean task as to the preparations concerning the envisioned first-ever Phlippine Boxing Convention to be held sometime before the end of the first quarter next year.

"We are not trying to rush things, but we will see to it that it won't be topsy-turvy," assures the young and energetic Chairman of the GAB, Eric R. Buhain. "Since this is unprecedented in the history of Philippine professional boxing, strategic preparations and no-nonsense effort will be extended in order to show the seriousness of the government to create an a venue of clear climate, so that we could further produce world class fighters in the near future," he further stressed, noting that pro-boxing falls under the vital tasks of the agency as the presidential watchdog of professional sports in the country.

Of perfect timing, as this fast-approaching end of the year is not only an opportune time, but an incumbent duty to report to the constituency the achievements, I mean major accomplishments done by the office. And after which, all of us public officials, sworn to uphold and protect the mandate of the agency will be put before the bar of public opinion for judgement, based on what we have and have not delivered to them as expected of us. After all, we are servants of the people.

So the detailed and comprehensive preparations now begin. Why is it that of all the pro-sports, the GAB Board is so eager to hold a pro- boxing convention?

Here are some of the dominant reasons:

1. The E.O. 120 series of 1948 (laws pertaining to the development of pro-boxing and karate in the Philippines), issued and signed by the Former President is older than the GAB, since the agency was only estabilshed via E.O. 392 in 1951, and all other succeding governing laws.

2. GAB as an agency serving as vanguard of all pro-sports is an active member in good standing of all world boxing sanctioning bodies (as a matter of truth, past and present members of this Board were and are officers of these global boxing bodies).

3. And the most compelling reason, professional boxing had, and continues to be a source of fame and glory for the country. And so, what will be the focus if not the end goal of all these synchronized mechanisms by the GAB--within the go signal of the Office of the President through the Honorable Eduardo R.Ermita, our Executive Secretary, and the pro-boxing organizations (private groups)?

No need of course to over emphasize that this main project of the GAB is to hold a calculated and carefully planned summit that will bring into fold all the top big bosses of the international pro-boxing organizations, encourage the unity among Philippine boxing promoters, managers, trainors, referee/judgees and therefore streamlining our main thrust to improve the morale and the life of our great and upcoming fighters. By so doing, we could easily draw a picture of a sound and competent evolution of a new era of great Filipino fighters. Thus, the objective to hold this event by next year now commences, taking into account the funds needed, invitations, communications, programs, venue and security including protocol and all other necessary arrangements and mode of the affair to be applied. Its going to be a two-pronged occasion. Strengthening our pro-boxing community into a globally competitive sport and at the same time, promoting tourism in the country. The respect and dignity that would eventually raise the esteem of our Filipino boxers and the people concerned here, is a paramount achievement to be attained, once this convention is successfully put into effect.

We are hoping, at this early stage, the support of the private sector and the general public especially those who are fans and lovers of professional boxing. Your valued support to this priority project means the enrichment of Philippine professional boxing.
