San Carlos, CA—Before heading off to Las Vegas for his February 13th bout against Gerson Guerrero, Nonito “the Filipino Flash” Donaire, hosted a media day in his home training camp for this fight, the Undefeated Boxing Gym in San Carlos, CA (about a 30 minute drive from San Francisco).
The media and the fans were invited to catch a glimpse of how Donaire is training for his upcoming bout. Typically, Donaire has lighter workouts on Saturdays, especially a day after a long sparring session. However, after being overwhelmed by the huge turnout, Donaire stepped up the training and went even longer than planned. This prompted his new trainer, Robert Garcia, to jokingly request fans to come to every training session.
Garcia, who has trained several world champions and is a former world champion himself, joined the team prior to opening training camp and works along side Jonathon Penalosa, who trained Donaire for his last fight.
Donaire displayed tremendous hand speed and power, especially from his left hand. Nonito’s left hook is one of the best weapons in the game. After a long “traditional boxing workout”, consisting of the shadow boxing, mitts, heavy bag, and speed day, Donaire went through a rigorous polymeric regiment. Donaire does this to strength his core and his legs so he can last longer in fights. Manny Pacquiao implements a similar program.
Donaire headlines the 3rd installment of Top Rank’s PPV series “Pinoy Power”. Donaire, 22-1 (14 KOs), last fought back in August when he won a 12 round decision over Rafael Concepcion, who did not make the 115lbs weight limit. Concepcion’s size advantage was a main factor to the fighter lasting 12 rounds.
Also on the card, Gerry Penalosa faces Erik Morel in a title eliminator. The winner of that fight would face WBO Bantamweight titlist, Fernando Montiel, if he can defeat the very young Ciso Morales. Also, Bernabe Concepcion tries to bounce back after a disqualification loss to Steven Lueveno when he takes on Mario Santiago. Mark Jason Melligen will also try to comeback from a surprising loss when he faces Raymond Gatica. Donaire’s latest fighter, Bruno Escalante, will make his pro debut against Alejandro Solorio.
The card takes place at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas on February 13, 2010. The card will also be televised on PPV.
Praises must be given to Team Filipino Flash, who promoted and hosted the event. They also provided food and drinks for everyone who attended the workout as well as gave away numerous gifts and prizes. Donaire stayed after to sign autographs and take pictures.
