Prior to the fight at the Staples Center in LA, Shane Mosley said he would once again shock the world as he had back in 2000 when he defeated Oscar De La Hoya via split decision victory to claim the WBC welterweight crown. He sure lived up to that promise in front of a sold out crowd of 20,280 (sold out attendance and largest crowd ever at the Staples Center) as he battered Margarito after knocking him down and seriously hurting him in the 8th rd. By the 9th rd, Margarito?s corner was forced to throw in the towel as their fighter was receiving too much punishment from Mosley. Mosley likely came into this fight with a heavy heart. Reports have him going through a divorce with his wife Jin, also his manager, who was not in attendance for the fight. Also for the second time in his professional career, his father and trainer, Jack Mosley was not in his corner for a fight. According to insiders, the decision to replace the elder Mosley as trainer was not because of any bad blood as Jack Mosley was in attendance for the fight. Shane even thanked his dad for his support and both father and son appeared harmonious at the post fight press conference. According to insiders, the reason for the change in trainer was that Mosley believed Nazim Richardson, a different trainer, had the keys to victory against the tough Margarito.

In round one, Mosley used good foot work and boxing ability to evade the slower, but dangerous Margarito. Both fighters were able to connect, but Mosley landed more punches. Round scored 10-9 for Mosley by Philboxing (PB). In round two Mosley looked to gain Margarito?s respect by engaging in toe to toe action. Margarito got the better of the exchanges witched forced Mosley to clinch (hold) in order to disrupt Margarito?s rhythm. Round scored 10-9 by PB for Margarito. In round three, Mosley elected to box more and kept Margarito at bay by using a good stiff jab. Maragarito is relentless, keeps up the pressure and is able to connect and hurt Mosley. Shane clinches and holds on for dear life. Round was scored 10-10 (even) by PB. In round four, both fighters brawl with Mosley surprisingly getting the better of the exchanges. The Round was scored 10-9 by PB for Mosley. Much of the same action followed in round five with Margarito getting the better of the exchanges. The round was scored 10-9 for Margarito. In round six, Mosley stuns Margarito much to the surprise of Margarito?s supporters. The round was scored 10-9 by PB for Mosley. In round seven, Mosley takes over the fight by outboxing, outslugging, and outsmarting Margarito. The round was scored 10-9 for Mosley by PB. In round eight, Mosley shocks those in attendance by knocking down the and seriously hurting the ?granite chin? Margarito. Margarito takes the full eight count, but is very unsteady on his feat. Mosley goes in for the kill, but Maragrito is literally saved by the bell as the round ends. The round was scored 10-8 for Mosley. According to ringside reports, Margarito trainer wanted to stop the fight, but Margarito refused and elected to continue. At the start of round nine, sensing Margarito was hurt; Mosley swarms Margarito and throws multiple power punches as his prey is against the ropes. Maragrito was not defending himself and his corner conceded the fight by throwing in the white towel so the referee mercifully stopped the fight. The crowd, which was largely pro-Margarito, was shocked. At least five fights broke out in the arena. Security did a good job in maintaining order. Most of the crowd stood in disbelief.

At the post fight press conference, Mosley gave Maragrito credit as being a good fighter. He admitted that some of Margarito?s punched did hurt/stun him, but overall he had no problem in facing Margarito because of his strength. With this victory he adds the WBA welterweight championship to his trophy case. As for his next opponent, Mosley will look to a rematch against Miguel Cotto, or the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton. This boxing reporter believes Mayweather will announce he wants to fight Mosley as early as 1/26/08 now that Margarito (Goliath) has been slayed by Mosley (David). As for Margarito, only is Promoters, Top Rank will know what?s next for him. Rumors abounded that he may have had trouble making the 147lb weight limit. Perhaps the 154lb division may be a better home for Margarito who appeared weak and at times was manhandled by the shorter Mosley. Mosley improves his professional career record to 46-5 (39 KOs) while Margarito drops to 37-6 (27 KOs).
