SOLIS LOOKING TO BECOME THE FILIPINO ASSASSIN!

San Francisco, CA?Ulises Solis must have really taken his brother?s defeat at the hand of Filipino Icon, Manny Pacquiao, personally last April of 2007. Ulises worked the corner of the previously undefeated Jorge Solis in his quest to pull of the major upset against Pacquiao. Pacquiao would deck Jorge twice in the eighth, knocking out the elder brother. Manny Pacquiao has been recognized by the majority of boxing fans as the Mexican Assassin because of his streak of victories over Mexico?s elite fighters.

Since then, Ulises, IBF light flyweight champion, has gone on a ?Kill Bill? like revenge journey, knocking out two Filipino fighters in his last two fights. His first Pinoy victim was former 105lbs title challenger, Rodel Mayol, on August 4, 2007. Mayol?s only loss at the time was a close decision over then WBC miniumweight champion, Eagle Kyowa, in a fight of the year candidate back in 2006. Mayol almost knocked Solis out during the fight only to suffer a devastating one-punch knockout at the hands of Solis. Solis, 26-1-2 (20 KOs), possesses extreme power for his weight class.

In Solis? most recent fight, he stopped veteran Filipino Bert Batawang in the ninth round.

Now Solis faces his third Filipino in a row in Filipino-American Glen Donaire, 17-3-1 (9KOs). Glen is the older brother of IBF flyweight champion, Nonito Doniare. Donarie is mostly known for his two defeats against Vic Darchinyan and Z Gorres. In 2005, Donaire suffered a first round knockout via a single body punch by Z Gorres at 115lbs. In 2006, Donaire suffer a dislocated jaw during the middle of his bout against Vic Darchinyan and lost on points in a technical decision at 112lbs.

Donaire fight against Solis will take place at 108lbs, which is probably his most natural weight. Both fighters officially weighed in at 107.8 pounds the night before the fight. Based on his track record, when Donaire steps up to the elite level in his weight class, he usually falls short in those bouts. However, Donaire has had a full training camp to prepare for Solis and may have the size advantage over the champion. A win over Solis in Mexico would truly be a historic event for Philippine boxing. The last Filipino to win a world title bout in Mexico was WBC featherweight champion, Luisito Espinosa, when he knocked out Alejandro Gonzalez in the fourth round at Guadalajara, Mexico way back in 1996.

The Solis-Donaire bout is on the undercard to the Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Matt Vanda main event. The bout will be televised on Azteca America, which is available on most digital cable providers. Here in the Bay Area, the channel can be found on 620 and will air live 7pm pacific time.
