JOHNNYZA Duran, a former kickboxer from Davao City will make her debut as a mixed martial artist in the 4th Gov. RST Mixed Martial Arts Slugfest on July 3, Friday at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center.
The 22-year-old Duran, a 4th year criminology student of Rizal Memorial College, will face veteran RB Jean Dela Peña of Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
Duran thinks that Dela Peña is “really good and strong.”
“She’s active in combat sports, so I know that she has a lot of experience and skills,” said Duran.
“I respect that, and I know it won’t be an easy fight. But I’ll focus on myself, trust my preparation, and do my best inside the cage,” she added.
Duran was formerly under Kings Sword when she bagged a gold medal in kickboxing in the Philippine National Games in Manila.
Duran, who was also cited as the “Best Female Fighter”, is now training back this month under Fit MMA and Cenojas MMA.
“This is my comeback fight after almost two years away from competition,” said Duran.
Duran said that “a lot has changed”.
“But one thing stays the same. I'll give my best, trust my training, and leave everything in that cage,” said Duran.
Duran said: “Mixed Martial Arts is one of the hardest combat sports because it combines striking and grappling in one fight.
“Unlike pure striking sports, MMA demands more from your body because you need to punch, kick, wrestle, defend takedowns, and fight on the ground.
“It is harder because it drains your energy faster, your strength, stamina, and endurance are constantly tested.
“Every movement matters, and one mistake can change the whole fight.
“That’s why MMA is not just about hitting, it's about surviving, adapting, and staying sharp even when you’re exhausted.”
The Duran-Dela Peña 49kg fight will be the only female match.
There will be a total of nine pairs plus a 3-on-3 team competition. It is free admission and will start at 5 pm.
Board Member Junneth Ines Hurtado is the tournament director while matchmaker is Jenery Quiñonero.
