New York Knicks win the NBA Championship with historic comeback

After a 53-year wait, New York Knicks fans finally had reason to celebrate after a historic run. The New York franchise defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 on Saturday, June 14, to capture their third NBA title. In another thrilling Finals series, the team rallied in the fourth quarter to avenge their 1999 Finals loss, closing out the series 4-1.
After a series of games decided in the final minutes, Game 5 was decided by a fourth-quarter comeback, led by the team's star, Jalen Brunson. He was the game's leading scorer with 45 points, outscoring San Francisco's star, Victor Wembanyama, who had 19 points.
The trophy brought with it a taste of revenge, as the Knicks' last Finals appearance before this season had been against the Spurs in 1999. On that occasion, the San Antonio team won the series 4-1 and claimed the first title in its history. Twenty-seven years later, the reunion between the two franchises gave the New York team a new opportunity to rewrite the rivalry.
Although the victory came in the fifth game of the series, the New York team staged the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history last Thursday, the 11th, when the Knicks were down by 29 points but managed to turn the score around and take the victory. The biggest comeback until then belonged to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 Finals, when they overcame a 24-point deficit against the Los Angeles Lakers.
San Antonio jumped out to a ten-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but just like every other game in the series, the final period was full of surprises. Jalen Brunson was even more inspired, taking control of the game, tying the score at 83-83 with just under five minutes remaining, and then taking the lead with a free throw. Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby continued the Knicks' scoring spree, sinking crucial free throws, while Wembanyama missed two three-pointers in the final seconds that could have changed the franchise's fate. With the crowd in a frenzy and on its feet, the Knicks sealed the 94-90 victory.
