Mexican boxing historian Eduardo Lamazón passes away at 70

Journalist, commentator, and boxing historian Eduardo Lamazón, affectionately known as "Don Lama," passed away on May 4, 2026, at the age of 70 in Mexico City.
Lamazón will be remembered as a legendary figure in world boxing, distinguished as an analyst, commentator on TV Azteca, and former executive secretary of the World Boxing Council (WBC).
Lamazón was born on December 2, 1956, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but adopted Mexico as his home and country of residence.
He began his career in sports journalism at the age of 16 in Argentina, eventually collaborating with the team of the legendary Carlos Monzón.
For 24 years, he was José Sulaimán's right-hand man at the World Boxing Council, serving as executive secretary.
He became a pillar of Box Azteca (The Home of Boxing), where his catchphrase, "Lama, Lama, Lamita!" became iconic. His round-by-round scorecards became a part of Mexican and Latin American boxing culture.
In April 2025, he was honored for his 50-year career in the sport.
Lamazón was admired for his elegance, analytical precision, and profound knowledge of world boxing history.
He owned the restaurant "Mi Viejo" in Polanco, Mexico City, and published several books about his passion.
Many expressions of condolence for his passing have been offered by prominent figures such as Mauricio Sulaimán and his colleagues on the TV Azteca Deportes broadcast team.
"Don Lama" left a heartfelt message of gratitude to Mexico after his death. In a posthumous message shared through his official channels, Lamazón expressed that it wasn't a "goodbye," but rather a "see you later."
During his final message, he emphasized his gratitude to the country that welcomed him and allowed him to build a career spanning more than five decades in the sport.
He thanked Mexico for being his home and for the affection he received from the Mexican public throughout his career.
He highlighted his pride in having been a fundamental part of Box Azteca and the World Boxing Council (WBC), where he became an authoritative voice with his iconic phrase, "Lama, Lama, Lamita."
In his message, he emphasized that "this is not an end," reaffirming his love for boxing and his eternal connection with the fans.
Until we meet again, Don Lama, thank you always for your attention and the moments we shared... You were simply always a 10 out of 10... We will miss you.
