Carlo Biado is the last Filipino remaining in the 2026 Yalin WPA Men’s 8-Ball World Championship being held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, after he advanced to the final 16 on Monday, April 6, 2026.
In the round of 32, Biado defeated Gerson Martinez Boza of Chile with a score of 10-5 to secure his spot in the next round.
Prior to that, in the losers’ qualification round, Biado blanked Vitaly Pastura of Ukraine with an 8-0 score.
Biado will next face Marco Teutscher of the Netherlands in the round of 16, which begins at midnight on Wednesday (Philippine time).
Other Filipino players, Lee Van Corteza, Jeffrey De Luna, and Sean Mark Malayan, have all packed their bags after suffering defeats in the qualification round, leaving Biado as the sole Filipino to progress further in the tournament.
De Luna was the first to fall with a narrow 7-8 loss to Stefan Kasper of Germany, followed by Malayan who suffered a 6-8 defeat to Casper Cappe Matikainen of Finland. Corteza, for his part, struggled and succumbed to Wiktor Zielinski of Poland with a score of 4-8.
The week-long event has a total prize fund of $300,000, where the champion will take home $90,000, while the runner-up will receive $42,000.
Meanwhile, Chezka Centeno and Rubilen Amit also booked spots in the Last 16 of the Seybert’s Women’s Open at the same venue after edging their respective rivals.
Centeno, a two-time world 10-ball champion, dominated Chiang Shui Ching of Chinese Taipei with scores of 4-0, 4-3, while Amit overcame Pia Filler of Germany in a marathon four-hour match with scores of 3-4, 4-1, 3-3, 2-1.
Following their victories, Centeno will face Chihiro Kawahara of Japan, while Amit is set for a thrilling duel against Jasmin Ouschan of Austria.
In the Poison by Predator Mixed Doubles Open, which is being held concurrently with the two aforementioned events, the pair of Centeno and Scottish player Jayson Shaw lost to Fu Xiaofang of China and Justin Bergman of the United States with scores of 4-1, 3-4, 3-4 in the semifinals.
Amit and Biado also teamed up in the event but exited earlier in the quarterfinals after being defeated by American Ashley Benoit and Polish player Mieszko Fortunski with scores of 4-1, 3-4, 3-3, 2-3.
Centeno and Shaw settled for a shared $10,000 consolation prize, while Amit and Biado pocketed a combined $5,000 purse from the $90,000 10-ball tournament. (Marlon Bernardino)
