Due to the tragic death of boxer Erntes Oko Akushey "Bahubali," the National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended all boxing activities in the country with immediate effect after an extensive meeting with the country's authorities, including the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Bahubali, 32, passed away on September 23rd after his super middleweight bout, which he lost by technical knockout in eight rounds to Jacob Dickson last Friday, September 12th, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
There is no formal information on the cause of Akushey's death, but there are strong indications that it could have been due to the blows he received in the ring during his loss to Dickson.
The NSA statement states that the decision to suspend all boxing activities is based on a joint commitment with the Ministry of Sports to protect the health and well-being of the athletes.
The NSA and the Ministry of Sports have been working to implement a comprehensive plan to create a Committee to manage all matters related to the sport, and they have adopted the recommendations of the Boxing Ministerial Committee with reforms that are expected to strengthen medical, technical, and regulatory procedures.
