Canizales vs. Pradabsri
Former WBA champion CANIZALES wins the WBC title with a fifth round kayo of champion PRADABSRI.
Round 1
Canizales was working his jab early coming forward and also firing rights. He forced Pradabsri to the ropes and let fly with some body punches. Pradabsri looked slow and was just throwing one punch at a time. Canizalez launched a fierce attack and they traded shots with Canizales landing a sharp right to the head. Canizales pressed his attack driving Pradabsri along the ropes and connecting with a left hook. Canizales continued to drive Pradabsri back but was leaving himself open and a right whistled past his chin.
Score: 10-9 Canizales
Round 2
Pradabsri was the one coming forward jabbing and he looked dangerous with a right. He landed a couple of good hooks to the body. Canizales also scored to the body and connected with a hard right and forced Pradabsri to the ropes and fired hooks and uppercuts but Pradabsri worked his way off the ropes and they traded shots.
Score: 10-9 CanizalesCanizales 20-18
Round 3
They exchanged hooks and a left hook shook Canizales but he landed a couple of his own. Canizalez was using his faster hands to score with Pradabsri throwing single but harder punches. Canizalez drove forward firing hooks with Pradabsri backing to the ropes but walking Canizales onto a left hook. Their heads banged together and Pradabsri walked away from the action pawing at his forehead. The referee stopped the fight and the doctor examined Pradabsri but there was no trace of a cut. The round ended with Canizalez firing bursts of punches and Pradabsri looking dangerous with solo rights.
Score: 10-9 CanizalesCanizales 30-27
Round 4
Pradabsri opened with some jabs and then landed a right to the head that sent an off balance Canizales into the ropes. He was held up by the ropes so the referee stepped in and gave him a count. After the count Pradabsri walked after Canizales jabbing and throwing rights with Canizalez on the back foot. Canizales came to life again and was letting fly with rights through Pradabsri’s defence. The pace had slowed right down but again his speed was a giving Canizales the edge.
Score: 10-8 PradabsriCanizales 38-37
Round 5
Pradabsri was slow and overreaching with his punches leaving himself open to counter hooks from Canizales. A heavy right to the head from Canizales rocked Pradabsri. Canizales bombarded Pradabsri with punches with Pradabsri being forced back until a combination from Canizales finished off with a left hook to the body dropped him in a corner. He sat propped up against the ropes and was unable to make any attempt to get up and was counted out.
Canizales gets revenge for a majority decision loss to Pradabsri for the vacant title in December. Pradabsri is a former WBC minimumweight champion.
Mayora vs. Pacheco
In a clash of Venezuelans MAYORA wins the vacant WBC Feconsur title with a majority victory over PACHECO. Despite the majority decision Mayora was a clear winner. Two judges scored it 99-89 and 97-91 but the third delivered a loudly booed 94-94. Mayora had lost on points to unbeaten Chris Esabe in France but has rebounded with four wins. Pacheco had scored all sixteen of his wins inside the distance but 12 of his victims had never won a fight and two others had just 3 wins between them.
Colmenares vs. Ysaya
COLMENARES wipes out YSAYA in two rounds to collect the vacant Venezuelan title. He floored Ysaya in the first round and twice in the second to force the finish. Colmenares has ended all of his winning fights inside the distance. Fourth loss by KO/TKO for Ysaya.
Rondon vs. Pena
RONDON wins the vacant WBA Fedelatin title with a seventh round stoppage of PENA. Rondon, the WBC Youth champion, had retained her Youth title with a draw against Lauryne Brankaer in France. She has beaten nine of her opponents by KO/TKO but again those nine opponents had just two wins between them and the five opponents Pena had beaten had only one win between them.
CHICAGO, IL, USA: SUPER LIGHT: OSCAR DUARTE (30-2-1) W PTS 12 KENNTH SIMS JR (22-2-1). SUPER LIGHT: REGIS PROGRAIS (30-3) W PTS 10 JOSEPH DIAZ (34-8-1). CRUISER: TRISTAN KALKREUTH (16-1) W RTD 2 DEVONTE WILLIAMS (13-3). HEAVY: JOSHUA EDWARDS (4-0) W TKO 1 CAYMAN AUDIE (4-2). LIGHT HEAVY: YAIR GALLARDO-LOZANO (10-0) W PTS 8 QUINTON RANKIN (21-10-2). SUPER BANTAM: GAEL CABRERA (9-0) W KO 1 RICHARD REYES (3-1-1, 1ND).
Duarte vs. Sims
DUARTE wins a majority decision over SIMS in an entertaining WBA eliminator. Sims made a good start with plenty of clever movement and accurate jabbing. Duarte was piling forward taking the fight to Sims and he upped the pressure. He outscored Sims in the second and shook him with a left hook late in the third. Sims was often choosing to stand and trade with Duarte instead of using his superior skills. Duarte continued to forge forward in the fourth with Sims countering on the back foot but constantly under pressure. Sims rebounded to have a good fifth with his precision jabbing and some useful body punches. Sims chose to stand and trade in the sixth and seventh and that handed the initiative to Duarte who connected with uppercuts and hooks inside rocking Sims at the end of the seventh round. Sims was countering well and all of the rounds were close but Duarte had edged in front. Sims continued to score with jabs and left hooks and had a better eighth as Duarte seemed to slow. Duarte was fired up again in the ninth helped by Sims still not using his superior skills and too often either pinned against the ropes or standing mid ring and trading. It was making for an entertaining fight but not doing Sims any favours. Duarte continued to outwork Sims in the tenth. Sims was more accurate and landing better quality shots but Duarte was pumping out more punches. Sims came back with a good eleventh. Again his jabs and left hooks worked well for him and he stayed off the ropes more. Duarte pressed hard throughout the twelfth. Sims fought back hard but Duarte just kept throwing punches and looked to have hurt Sims with a right late in the round. It had been a great fight and the judges had it close with scores of 116-112 and 115-113 for Duarte and 114-114. This was an eliminator to find the mandatory challenger for Gary Antuanne Russell's WBA super lightweight title so a huge win for Duarte. Sims has plenty of talent and will come again and fight for a title.
Prograis vs. Diaz
PROGRAIS has to overcome some rocky moments to score a close unanimous decision over DIAZ in a brutal slugfest. Prograis was finding the target with jabs and working inside in the first when near the end of the round Diaz connected with two lefts and Prograis was staggered and unsteady. He tried to fire back but Diaz was swamping a reeling Prograis bombarding him with punches and the bell saved Prograis. He seemed to have recovered in the second, He was taking the fight to Diaz scoring well with jabs and overhand rights. It was a good round for Prograis except for the last five seconds when he suddenly seemed to have been shaken by a punch. Prograis had the better of the exchanges over the third and fourth and in the fourth a clash of heads saw an ugly cut opened under Diaz’s left eye. The ringside doctor examined it and let the fight continue. The cut bled profusely but was not dangerous. Prograis slipped to the floor at the end of the round and as he was sitting on the canvas Diaz landed a punch. It was not hard and the bell went without the referee taking any action. Prograis was beginning to dominate the action easily finding gaps for his rights in the fifth but he seemed unsteady at the end of the round, The doctor again examined Diaz’s cut. He held up his fingers and asked Diaz how many he could see. Diaz twice got the answer wrong but the fight continued. There were some fierce exchanges in the sixth with Diaz outlanding Prograis and Prograis was again shaken by a combination. It was toe-to-toe stuff over the seventh and eighth with Prograis edging the seventh and Diaz again shaking Prograis in the eighth and ninth to tighten the scores but Prograis just had that bit more left and he did enough to win the tenth and the fight. Scores 96-94 twice and 98-92 for Prograis. He has hopes of another title shot but at times during this fight he seemed to have seriously diminished punch resistance and Diaz is not a big puncher not having won a fight inside the distance since 2019. Prograis is 36 and has dropped out of the ratings after losses to Devin Haney and Jack Catterall so will need a win over a highly rated boxer to get close to another title shot. Diaz was 2-6 in his last 8 fights so has even more work to do to revive his chances.
Kalkreuth vs. Williams
KALKREUTH has no trouble disposing of an overmatched WILLIAMS. The first round saw Kalkreuth prowling after a retreating Williams. Whilst backing up Williams reddened Kalkreuth face with some jabs but showed no power and Kalkreuth landed a couple of good shots before the bell. Williams made no attempt to fight in the second. He just kept going back not throwing punches and when Kalkreuth landed a left hook to the head followed by one to the body Williams not very convincingly dropped to the canvas on his back. Kalkreuth performed a victory somersault as Williams was unmoving-until the count reached eight at which time he jumped up and began to take out his mouthguard. The referee decided not to stop the fight but actually walked Williams around for about ten seconds and then signalled for the fight to continue. After the end of the round the referee held a long discussion with Williams and his corner and Williams did not come out for the third round. Eleventh inside the distance win for Kalkreuth but neither Kalkreuth, Williams or the referee gained any glory from this fight.
Edwards vs. Audie
Another waste of time for Olympian EDWARDS as he stops an inept AUDIE in just 89 seconds. Edwards stalked Audie and after a couple of jabs then started clowning before dropping Audie with a right. After the count Edwards sent Audie staggering across the ring with a right and landed another right to the back of the head that sent Audie head first to the ropes and the referee jumped in and halted the farce. The four wins Edwards has scored have taken less than 5 founds and all he is learning is bad habits.
Gallardo vs. Rankin
Tall Mexican prospect GALLARDO, 22, got eight rounds of work as he outpointed experienced southpaw RANKIN. Gallardo, 6’2” controlled the action from the first and floored Rankin with a body punch in the sixth on the way to winning on scores of 79-72 twice and 80-71.
Cabrera vs. Reyes
CABRERA was supposed to be moving up to eight rounds for a test but finished Cuban REYES in the first round. Reyes was down twice from body punches and counted out. Sixth inside the distance win for the 20-year-old Mexican.
AUGUST 1
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA : MIDDLE: SEBASTIAN PAPESCHI (23-5) W TKO 7 KEVIN ZARATE (9-4).
PAPESCHI wins the vacant Argentinian title with a seventh round victory over ZARATE. Southpaw Papeschi took control from the start and rocked Zarate with two rights in the first and some punishing body shots in the second. Zarate landed some good counters in the fifth but faded under some sustained attacks in the sixth and he was being bombarded with punches in the seventh when his corner threw in the towel to save their man. Papeschi was coming off a points loss against Pole Fiodor Czerkaszyn for the vacant WBC International title in October. Zarate had won 7 of his last 8 fights.
MATAMOROS, MEXICO: ARMANDO GONZALEZ (19-2-2) W PTS 10 MIGUEL MARTINEZ (12-8).
GONZALEZ makes it 2-0 in fights against MARTINEZ. Gonzalez had won a majority decision over Martinez in February 2024 and both of them were coming off a loss. No scores but Gonzalez by unanimous decision.
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND: SUPER FEATHER: MEA MOTU (22-1) W PTS 10 SARA JALONEN (6-3).
MOTU jumps two divisions and wins the WBA Oceania title with a unanimous decision over champion JALONEN who was cut in a clash of heads in the eighth. Scores 99-91 twice and 100-90. Having lost her IBO super bantamweight title in a unification match against Ellie Scotney Motu is now looking to get a title shot at super feather. Finnish-born Jalonen was making the first defence of her title.
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA: PATRICK MUKALA (17-2-1) W RTD 5 CRISTIANO NDOMBASSY (14-9). LIGHT: KAINE FOURIE (11-1-2) W TKO 2 OUMPIE SIBEKO (4-2-1).
Mukala vs. Ndombassy
MUKALA makes it six wins in a row and captures the vacant IBO All-African title with win over Angolan NDOMBASSY. Mukala dominated the first with his jab and droppedNdombassy in the second.Ndombassy wobbled from a left hook in the third and took punishment in the fourth and fifth and did not come out for the sixth. Now 14 wins by KO/TKO for South African-based Congolese boxer Mukala. He lost to Rowan Campbell for the super-middleweight version of this title but has impressed since moving down to middleweight. Ndombassy is 1-4 in his last 5 bouts.
Fourie vs. Sibeko
FOURIE takes another step to recovery as he stops SIBEKO in the second round. Second win for Fourie since a shock one round defeat against Sifiso Hlongwane.
AUGUST 2
LONG BEACH, CA, USA: SUPER BANTAM: JERWIN ANCAJAS (37-4-2) W PTS 8 RUBEN CASERO (13-5). SUPER FEATHER: NATHAN RODRIGUEZ (20-1) W PTS 8 ALEXANDER ESPINOZA (23-8-3). LIGHT HEAVY: GABRIEL ROSADO (27-17-1) W KO 1 CRISPULO ANDINO (26-18-1).
Ancajas vs. Casero
ANCAJAS eases his way back into the American boxing scene with a comfortable decision over CASERO. Forget the ridiculous majority decision Ancajas won ever round. He controlled the fight behind his right jab and stepped in with straight lefts to the body. Casero was constantly on the back only lunging forward with an occasional attack. It was a solid if unspectacular performance by Ancajas but it was difficult to look good against such a negative opponent. Two judges actually watched the fight and scored it 80-72 for Ancajas but what the judge who scored it 76-76 was watching I have no idea. The former IBF super fly champion had won the Philippines super bantam title with a second round kayo of experienced Richie Mepranum in January and will now go looking for a title shot at super bantam next year. Uruguayan Casero has lost every fight he has had out of Uruguay.
Rodriguez vs. Espinoza
RODRIGUEZ wins again as he takes a unanimous decision over useful Nicaraguan ESPINOZA. The speed skill and longer reach of Rodriguez saw him through this test but he had to fight hard as Espinoza applied plenty of pressure. Scores 80-72, 79-73 and 77-75. The 20-year-old from Pico Rivera is being sensibly matched by his father, the promoter, and progressing well. Third consecutive fight against an unbeaten boxer for Espinoza and he is 0-1-2 now in those three fights.
Rosado vs. Andino
ROSADO wastes no time on his return to the ring as he knocks out pitiful Argentinian ANDINO. Late in the first round a right to the body had Andino bending in half and another right dropped him. Andino lay face down on the canvas resting his head on his gloves and made no attempt to get up. First fight since April 2023 for Rosado who is giving it another go at 39. Now 14 losses by KO/TKO for Andino.
MALAGA, SPAIN : WELTER: SAMUEL MOLINA (32-3-1) DREW 12 ANAS MESSAOUDI (17-0-1). LIGHT: RAFAEL ACOSTA (15-1) W TKO 3 GIUSEPPE CARAFA (20-7-2).
Molina vs. Messaoudi
Home fighter MOLINA retains the European title with a majority draw against Belgian MESSAOUDI. After a couple of close rounds the visitor went into the lead making good use of his longer reach and some stiff jabbing and accurate counterpunching to head and body. He held that lead through the middle rounds until Molina upped his pace from the eighth dominating the exchanges and eating into Messaoudi lead. Messaoudi seemed to tire and Molina finished the fight the stronger the but he had not quite done enough to overcome Messaoudi’s early dominance. Scores 114-114 twice and 115-114 for Messaoudi. It was a very entertaining fight and Messaoudi deserves another shot at the title.
Acosta vs. Carafa
ACOSTA retains the European Silver title with a win over Italian CARAFA. The first two rounds were close with Carafa just doing enough to collect them. In the third Carafa stopped fighting indicating an injury to his left arm and he was unable to continue so Acosta retained the title. Tenth consecutive victory for Acosta but Carafa, who had won 6 of his last 7 fights, was very unlucky and again this would make a good return fight.
DEAUVILLE, FRANCE: HEAVY: MATTAR GARCIA (8-0) W TKO 7 EDER GALINA FORTES (5-2-1).
GARCIA retains the French title with a victory over previous victim FORTES. At the start Fortes marched forward trying to get past the longer reach of the taller Garcia but a punch from Garcia opened a cut over the right eyebrow of Fortes. Garcia boxed well jabbing and connecting with left hooks. and drew blood from the face of Fortes in the fourth, Although Fortes fought bravely the cut over his right eye was worsened by a punch in the seventh and the fight was stopped. First defence of the national title by Garcia who had outpointed Fortes in 2021 when both were having their first professional fight.
BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND: FEATHER: COLM MURPHY (15-0) W PTS 12 LUKE PEARSON (10-1).
MURPHY wins the vacant EBU Silver title with a convincing points victory over PEARSON. Murphy took control from the start and never relinquished his hold. Murphy kept Pearson under continuous pressure landing heavy shots to heads and body. Pearson struggled to get into the fight in any meaningful way and had to come through some very rocky moments as Murphy dialled up the pressure over the closing rounds. Murphy won on scores of 120-108 twice and 119-109. Murphy’s management indicated that the European, Commonwealth and British titles are in their sights but talk of being a mandatory challenger for the European title is misleading as the champion Cristobal Lorente is scheduled to defend in October against Nathaniel Collins and no mandatory will be appointed until after that fight.
NASHVILLE, TN: USA: FEATHER: VICTOR HERNANDEZ (15-0) W TKO 10 JAYVON GARNETT (10-3). SUPER WELTER: EVAN HOLYFIELD (13-1) W TKO 2 JEREMIAH ROBINSON (8-6).
Hernandez vs. Garnett
Louisiana’s HERNANDEZ scores a late stoppage over GARNETT to keep his 100% record intact. Hernandez was stepping up to ten rounds for the first time but ended it late to take the result out of the hands of the judges. That gives him 13 wins by KO/TKO and he won both the NABF junior featherweight and NABA featherweight belts. After 10 wins in a row it is now 3 losses in a row for Garnett.
Holyfield vs. Robinson
HOLYFIELD scores three knockdowns on the way to a second round stoppage of ROBINSON. Holyfield floored Robinson with a left hook to the body in the first. He sent Robinson down twice more in the second with the fight being stopped. This is Holyfield’s second fight since taking two years out to have open heart surgery. He has nine wins by KO/TKO. Only one of Robinson’s fourteen fights have gone the distance but he has lost six of them.
CARCAS, VENEZUELA: LIGHT FLY: AARON DE LA CRUZ (12-0) W KO 1 RODRIGO RAMIREZ (19-2-2). FEATHER: DOUGLAS GONZALEZ (9-0) W TKO 1 STARLING MARTINEZ (15-6). SUPER BANTAM: YERNY BETANCOURT (27-2) W TKO 12 MIGUEL MORENO (21-8). SUPER WELTER: ADRIAN SASSO (26-3) W TKO 5 DOMICIO RONDON (18-8). LIGHT FLY: IVAN GARCIA (13-4-1) W TKO 10 JESUS LAYA (9-4-1).
De La Cruz vs. Ramirez
Mexican DE LA CRUZ blasts out local fighter RAMIREZ. One left hook ended it after just 53 seconds with Ramirez down in a heap. This was to be the first ten round fight for the 21-year-old De La Cruz but instead he posted his seventh win by KO/TKO. Ramirez’s only loss had been a split decision against Junior Zarate in Argentina in 2023 and he was rated No 7 by the WBA.
Gonzalez vs. Martinez
Another first round finish saw GONZALEZ stop fellow-Venezuelan MARTINEZ with just one second remaining in the round. Gonzalez wins the vacant WBA Fedebol title with his ninth inside the distance finish in nine fights. Fourth loss by KO/TKO for Martinez
Betancourt vs. Moreno
BETANCOURT gained revenge for Venezuela as he scored a very late stoppage of Mexican featherweight champion MORENO. Betancourt had already floored Moreno in the first and tenth rounds. Moreno almost made it the final bell but the fight was stopped after 2:47 of the twelfth. Betancourt, 25, wins both the vacant WBA Gold and WBC Silver titles. Moreno had won his last six fights.
Sasso vs. Rondon
Argentinian SASSO stops Venezuelan RONDON in the fifth. Sasso put Rondon down with a left in the first. Rondon survived but in the fifths Sasso pinned Rondón against the ropes and unloaded heavy punches from both hands before the referee belatedly came in to save Rondon. Sasso retained the South American title with his tenth win in a row and his fifteenth victory by KO/TKO. Fifth defeat by KO/TKO for 42-year-old Rondon.
Garcia vs. Laya
GARCIA racked up another win for Mexico as he stopped Venezuelan LAYA to win the WBA Fedelatin title on a tenth round stoppage. A too tough test for Laya as Garcia had lost a majority decision against new WBC light flyweight champion in Caracas in July last year. Laya was making the first defence of the WBA title.
