International Master Angelo Young stays on course for GM norm

Penang, Malaysia ---International Master Angelo Young fortified his bid for a possible GM norm after Round 3 of the ASEAN + Senior Chess Championships at the Berjaya Hotel on Thursday here.
The 61-year-old Tondo, Manila resident pulled a giant upset after beating GM Alexander Raetsky of Russia in Round 2 then halved the point with compatriot GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. in Round 3.
Young, the 1982 Philippine Junior Champion tallied 2.5 points in three outings, the same output of GM Antonio, GM Cao Sang of Vietnam and his fourth round opponent countryman IM Rico Mascarinas.

"I hope I can sustain my momentum," said Young, who brought down Macau's De V R Joao Car Bartilotti in Round 1 last Wednesday.

GM Tu Hoang Thong of Vietnam defeated IM Dede Lioe of Indonesia to score his third consecutive win to stay on top.

In other Round 3 results, IM Mascarinas drew with GM Cao, NM Edmundo Gatus bested Daigo Kanda of Japan while IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad toppled Chee Chuen Steven Hoh of Malaysia.
Gatus and Bagamasbad notch 2.0 points each along with 7 other woodpushers.

The Filipinos' Malaysia chess campaign is also supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Prospero Pichay Jr. and under the supervision of NCFP CEO FST GM Jayson Gonzales in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) thru it's commissioner Ed Hayco.-Marlon Bernardino -
