CEBU, Philippines — In a hard-fought battle in Tokyo, Japan, Thanongsak Simsri of Thailand (39-1, 34 KOs) outmaneuvered Filipino Cristian Araneta (25-3, 20 KOs), securing a split decision victory and claiming the vacant IBF 108 world title.
Scorecards read 115-112, 116-111, and 113-114 in favor of Simsri, highlighting the fight's competitive nature.
The rumble had intense moments, especially in the pivotal 3rd round where Araneta landed a crisp left hand that sent Simsri crashing to the canvas.
However, Simsri demonstrated his resilience and tactical acumen, adjusting his strategy to become more aggressive and combining punches effectively in the later chapters.
Meanwhile, Araneta seemed to have struggled with nerves, finding it challenging to maintain his early momentum and land significant shots.
Throughout the twelve rounds, both fighters showcased their good skills, with Araneta displaying aggressiveness, strength and heart.
Although he ultimately fell short, Araneta's effort is commendable, and he can take pride in his performance.
Simsri's victory was ultimately decided by his ability to maintain pressure and volume of punches, a strategy that paid off in the end.
This win not only marks a significant achievement in Simsri's career.
It also shifts the rankings in the IBF junior flyweight division.
Notably, Filipino boxer Jayson Vayson becomes the highest-rated fighter in the IBF 108 world rankings, after Araneta's drop in rankings and Simsri's ascension as champion.
Other talented Pinoy boxers, including Regie Sunsgob (#4), ArAr Ándales (#12), and Arvin Magramo (#13), also hold notable positions in the IBF 108 rankings.
Given their current standings, it's possible that one of these talented Filipino fighters could become Simsri's first challenger.
