Quezon City IIEE-PSME Simba’s Tribe courtesy visit to GAB Chair Rivera

As the Season 5 of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) all-Filipino first conference underway on March 22, 2025, the team of Quezon City did a courtesy visit in GAB and secured the professional licenses for their players. National Master and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad and team Manager Allan Anthony P. Alvarez had met the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Chairman Rivera congratulates NM Bernardino who finished over all 7th place out of 152 participants at Penang International Chess Tournament last December in Penang, Malaysia and as Champion in the Laos International Chess Tournament last September in Ventiane, Laos. “Chess enhances intellectual discipline and critical thinking as the player had to actively and skillfully calculate several possibilities, analyzing opponent positions and evaluating the next best moves” say Rivera.

Quezon City team is to be supported by the office of Mayor Joy Belmonte, Institute of Integrate Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) being represented by its former National President Allan Alvarez, Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) being represented by its former National President Roger Reyes and team owner Danilo Ponay. Other members of the team are coach Michaela Concio, NM Jojo Aquino, NM Gerald Ferriol, NM Robert Arellano. NM Nicomedes Alisangco, NM Alvin Alcala, NM Marc Nazario, NM Romeo Alcodia, CM Joseph Navarro, CM Romy Fagon, AIM Francis Talaboc, Freddie Talaboc, Jellie Magro, Justine Corpin, Paulo Cristobal, Norman Madariaga, Patrick Erle Florendo, Elizsa Gayle Cafirma, Manilyn Cabungcag, Assistant Managers Dennis Alain Lladoc and Samivin delos Santos.

Meanwhile, in the international online Bundesliga tournament happening every Wednesday and Friday, the IIEE Chessmasters got the back to back championship of level 5 and 6 with the latest tournament led by FM Narquingden Reyes with 72 points leading other 120 players all over the World. Reyes beat GM Mihail Saltaev of Uzbekistan who place 3rd in the 11th Asian Team Chess Championship in Singapore in 1995. IIEE Chessmasters ranked 22nd and 29th in the World in year 2023 and 2024, respectively. The team is the lone Philippine team ranking in the Bundesliga and targeting to surpass those end year rank for 2025.-Marlon Bernardino -
