
GM Joey Antonio set to play for more tournaments local and abroad

FILIPINO GRANDMASTER Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, Jr. is now set to conquer the world after winning the 3rd D' Engineer's Cup rapid chess tournament dubbed as the Armageddon Battle of Champions held at the Koten Enterprises Inc. Corporate office in F.B. Harrison Street, Pasay City last March 8, 2025.
The 13-time Philippine Open champion Antonio won the tournament after beating Sherwin Tiu in the finals.
After the 3rd D' Engineer's Cup rapid chess tournament campaign, the Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro native Antonio also won second place behind eventual champion Grandmaster Daniel Maravilla Quizon in the just ended DG's Cup 2025 Invitational chess tournament at the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Auditorium, DD Dragon Center Meridian Park Building, 10th floor, Double Dragon , Pasay City last March 14, 2025.
The Quezon City-based Antonio, 63, is scheduled to represent the country in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) World Seniors Chess Championship on October 20 to November 2 in Gallipoli, Puglia, Italy.
To recall, Antonio toppled International Master Spartaco Sarno of Italy in 51 moves of a Caro-Kann Defense to finish second in the 50-and-above division of the 27th World Seniors Chess Championship in Acqui Terme, Italy in the 2017 edition.
Antonio will be seeing action next month when the Season 2 of Victoria Sports Club Rapid Chess Tournament gets going on April 5, 2025 at Victoria Sports Tower 2, Club Lounge (Ground Floor) 799 EDSA South Triangle, Quezon City.
After the Season 2 of Victoria Sports Club Rapid Chess Tournament, Antonio is set to compete in the 2025 Melbourne International Open Chess Championship and the 2025 Sydney International Open Chess Championship which will be held on April 7-14, 2025 and April 23-27, 2025, respectively.
