
The Don Tomas B. Mapua Centennial Chess Cup presents the GM Eugene Torre Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournaments on January 18, 2025

Mapua University will celebrate its 100th Founding Anniversary on January 25, 2025. In line with this, several activities have been lined up to commemorate this momentous occasion. To kick off the weeklong celebration, the Don Tomas B. Mapua Centennial Chess Cup presents GM Eugene Torre Rapid and Blitz Chess tournaments comprising 100 chess board matches. It will be organized by the Mapua Fil-Chi Alumni Association, headed by its president, Engr. Rudy Niu, in cooperation with the Mapua PE Department and MUSEO on January 18, 2025 at the Mapua Gymnasium, Intramuros, Manila.
The Rapid and Blitz tournament is exclusive to the Mapua community of Alumni, students, professors, and employees. The National Association of Mapua Alumni (NAMA) Affiliate organizations and corporate sponsors will sponsor the participants' FREE registration.
The tournament director is Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr.
The Rapid Champion here will receive a trophy and run away with the lion’s share of P10,000. The second to third placers will also receive trophies and P7,000 and P5,000, respectively. The fourth to tenth will receive medals and P1,000 each.
The Blitz Champion will receive a trophy and earn P5,000, while the second and third placers will go home with trophies and P3,000 and P2,000, respectively. The fourth to tenth placers will each receive medals and P500.
Among the participants are Engr. Nelson L. Salazar (former Mapua Champion and Board 1 of Mapua Chess Team that captured the 1st NCAA Chess Team Championship), Engr. Elias Ang, Engr. Michael Angelo Palma, Engr. Bren Sasot, Engr. Jay Arcenal, Engr. Ferdinand Olivares and members of the Mapua NCAA Junior and Chess Team. -Marlon Bernardino-
