NM Bernardino to hold chess simul in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan

Manila---National Master and United States Chess Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. will play simultaneous chess exhibition matches at the 3rd floor Executive Building in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan on January 11, 2025.

Sportsman/Engineer Ernesto "Snooky" Salcedo III said Bernardino, an online Arena Grandmaster, will hold a simul with select students and chess enthusiasts of Pozorrubio as part of the chess activities of Pozorrubio, a 1st class municipality in the province of Pangasinan.
“We’re excited. The students and residents of Pozorrubio are eager to meet and even play NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., in simultaneous chess exhibition matches,” said Salcedo, who is also the Vice-Mayor of Pozorrubio.

“NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. is the perfect choice to do the rare simultaneous chess exhibitions. He is a native of Binalonan, Pangasinan," Vice-Mayor Salcedo said.

Bernardino is fresh from 7th overall finishing in the 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024 Chess Championship held from December 23-27, 2024 at the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (Georgetown) in Penang, Malaysia.

Bernardino is the coach and delegation head of the PH chess team who won 2 golds and 1 bronze medal in the 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship which was held at the Hotel Baleira, Porto Santo Island, Portugal from Nov. 16-29, 2024.

It shall be recalled that Bernardino achieved another remarkable victory by winning first place in the 3rd Laos International Chess Open 2024 held at the 2nd floor Parkson@ Naga Mall in Vientiane, Laos from September 1 to 6, 2024.

Among those who are supporting his chess campaign here and abroad are ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon, International Billiard and Snooker Champion Marlon Manalo and Mr. Jessie Villasin.

"Thank you Vice Mayor Ernesto "Snooky" Salcedo III for inviting me to the one-day Pozorrubio Town Fiesta chess tournament on January 11, 2025," said the 47-year-old Bernardino, who is set to compete in the Sydney International Open 2025 to be held on April 23-27 at the Novotel West, Rooty Hill in Sydney, Australia.

Aside from the simul, there will also be a one-day chess tournament, backed up by mayor Kelvin Tan, vice mayor Salcedo, SK Municipal Federation President/ SK Chairman Vince Karl Thirdy Sarmiento, in line with its grassroots chess development program.
The champion here will run away with the lion’s share of P10,000.
The second to fifth placers will receive P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000, respectively.

The sixth to tenth will receive P500 each while the 11th to 20th will claim P300 apiece.

The top five Pozorrubio will have a special prize of P2,000, P1,000, P800, P700, and P500 while 6th to 10th placers will earn P300 each.
The top four kiddies will earn P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P500 while the 5th to 10th placers will went home P300 each. The top Pozorrubio kiddies will likewise to receive P500.

Among the top contenders from Pangasinan are Precious Eve Ferrer of Lingayen, Atty. Reddy Ceralde Balarbar of San Fabian, Atty. Rodolfo "Rudy" Rivera of Bolinao, Romy Fagon , Roadster and Regyne Palaming of Urdaneta City, Judylito Ulanday of Saul, Ormilito Ordizo of Alaminos and Fidel Labuanan of Binalonan.
