GM Quizon rules Kamatyas chess tilt

Las Piñas City---Grandmaster Daniel Maravilla Quizon emerged as the champion in the 14th Edition Year-End Kamatyas Rapid Chess Championship dubbed as Fusion of Flash and Iron last Saturday, December 14, 2024 at the SM Southmall in Las Piñas City.

GM Quizon pocketed the P30,000 purse and the trophy for ruling the tournament which fielded over 190 woodpushers.

He had an undefeated record after tallying 8.0 points on account of 7 wins and 2 draws in the nine-round Swiss system competition.
GM Quizon defeated Elle Castronuevo (Round 1), Randy Turreda (Round 2), Cris Aguilar (Round 3), National Master Angele Tenshi Biete (Round 4), National Master Giovanni Mejia (Round 5), FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz (Round 6) and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia (Round 8).

He snapped his six-match winning streak when he had a draw against FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca in the seventh round. He drew with Chester Neil Reyes in the ninth and final round.

Reyes went on placing second overall with 7.5 points. Reyes second place finish earned him P10,000 plus trophy while the third place went to International Master Ronald Dableo with 7.5 points to earn P7,000 plus trophy and the fourth place went to FIDE Master Roel Abelas to go home P5,000 plus medal.

" I would like to thank National Master David Almirol and International Master Roderick Nava of Kamatyas Chess Club for organizing and sponsoring a free registration and free food rapid chess tournament. I would also like to thank the Kamatyas Chess Club for giving me a cash incentive of P 1 Million after the World Chess Federation (FIDE) conferred my Grandmaster title," said GM Quizon, playing under the tutelage of his coach FM Abelgas.

The fifth to 10th placers were Biete (7.5 points), Arca (7.5 points), Daluz (7.0 points), FIDE Master Austin Jacob (7.0 points), International Master Chito Garma (7.0 points) and FIDE Master Nelson Villanueva (7.0 points), respectively. All other finishers also took home a cash prize of P2,000 and a medals.
Meanwhile, Quizon receives a cash incentive of P 1 million from Kamatyas Chess Club after the World Chess Federation (FIDE) conferred his Grandmaster title.
