
TV actor Jao Mapa to compete in PMA Masikhay chess tournament on Saturday

Parañaque City---An added attraction will be TV actor and chess enthusiast Jose Vicente Mapa 3rd, also known by his screen name Jao Mapa, who will match his skills against some of the country's top woodpushers when the 1st PMA Masikhay Open Rapid Chess Tournament gets underway on Saturday, August 3, 2024, 10 am at the 3rd level Wellness Space, SM City BF Parañaque.
Fans can look forward to seeing Jao again not on the big screen but competing in the 64 square board.
Jao is best known for his Pepsi-Cola advertisement. He started a modeling career in the late 1990s, and co-hosted television variety shows like Eat Bulaga and ASAP. He first starred in the movie 'Pare Ko' in 1995, and left show business in 2000 to study art.
"It's an honor to play in the prestigious 1st PMA Masikhay Open Rapid Chess Tournament, said Jao, a well known painter.
“This is a big opportunity for the young chessers to see their idols in person and hopefully it will inspire them to get into sports,” Jao referring to the participation of Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, International Masters Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Michael Concio Jr., Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Daniel Quizon, who is also the reigning National Open champion.
The 50,000 PHP total pot prizes tournament is presented by PMA “Masikhay” Class of 1999 in collaboration with Chess Movers and Shakers of the country. It is also supported by SM City BF Parañaque, IIEE and Bayanihan Chess Club.
PMA Class ‘99 President Cav Joey Baybayan had something to say about the said 1-day chessfest: “Encouraging our children to play Chess maybe our solution to the findings that they lack critical thinking. Chess will expose them to an environment that facilitates creativity, strategic thinking and innovation,”
"See you there. It is expected that chess luminaries of the Philippines will compete in the event," he added.
Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, International Masters Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Michael Concio Jr. Jose Efren Bagamasbad and GM elect Daniel Quizon, who is also the reigning National Open champion are among the top favorites in this 1-day rapid chess tournament which offers P10,000 to the champion.
Other top contenders are FM Christian Mark Daluz, FM Roel Abelgas, NM Jasper Faeldonia, NM Al Basher Buto, NM Mar Aviel Carredo, NM Karlycris Clarito Jr., NM Oshrie Jhames Reyes, NM Jerish John Velarde, NM Angele Tenshi Biete, NM Cedric Kahlel Abris, WNM Daren Dela Cruz, CM Genghis Imperial, Atty. Rodolfo "Rudy" Rivera and Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez.
