Jan Emmanuel Garcia shines in Xiangqi or Chinese Chess

Manila---Jan Emmanuel Garcia, a certified International Master in chess, made a podium finish at the conclusion of 17th Thousand Island Cups Philippine Xiangqi Open held at the Philippine Xianggi Federation headquarters, Dasmarinas Corporate Center in Binondo, Manila on Sunday, July 14.
Garcia, a program manager at Ateneo de Manila University chess team, finished the 3-day (July 7, 13, 14) event with 6.5 points, the same output of 2nd placer Wong Sing and 3rd placer Cai Jui Bing. Garcia settled fourth overall after the tie break was applied.
Tony Lim won the Group B crown with 7.5 points. Lim received P20,000, Sing got P12,000 and Bing pocketed P10,000.
Garcia, on the other hand took P8,000 for his efforts plus added bonus P10,000 for being the top Filipino finisher. If Garcia wound up 2nd, he would receive a bonus P100,000 according to Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou.
"I Am happy with my performance," said Garcia.
Angelo Abundo Young and Noel Jay Estacio,both tallied 5.0 points to receive P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.
Xiangqi Grandmaster Asi Ching won the Group A division with 6.0 points , enough to bring home P50,000.
No less than Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou and Xiangqi Master Jackson Hong led the closing rites.-Marlon Bernardino-
