Aspiring Filipino middleweight fighter Weljon Mindoro impressively won his US debut Wednesday night by knocking out his overmatched British opponent Tyler Goodjohn in the second round after scoring three knockdowns at the Whitesands Event Center in Plant City, Florida.

Mindoro fought the Briton in the undercard of the main event that saw undefeated Japan born American bantamweight Katsuma Akitsugi (11-0, 2 KOs) scoring a ninth round TKO against Eduardo Ramirez (22-4, 16 KOs). Akitsugi pounded on Ramirez until the bout was stopped at 1:48 of the ninth. Akitsugi downed Ramirez in round four.

Though the victory was impressive, it hardly improved Mindoro's credentials as Goodjohn was on his first bout coming back after seven years away from pro boxing. It was also Goodjohn's fifth loss and third by knockout.

Nonetheless, Mindoro improved his record to 12 wins, all by knockout as against a draw. Last year, he was held to a split draw by Japanese Takeshi Inoue in their fight for the WBO Asia Pacific super welterweight title held at Okada Manila.

Mindoro is rated number one in the Philippines and #88 by the boxrec. His career however expected to get further boost as he is now promoted by Daniel Rubin of the Probox Promotions LCC which organized the Florida fight card.

Locally, Mindoro is handled by Brendan Gibbons and the MP Promotions.
