
Andrew Elpedes sweeps IIEE Pampanga Independence Day chess games

Angeles City, Pampanga---Seasoned woodpusher Andrew Elpedes swept his assignments and scored 5.0 points to rule the just concluded Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) Pampanga Independence Day chess games held at the Best Western Plus Metro Clark Hotel in Angeles City, Pampanga last Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Elpedes opened his campaign with a win over Ryan Dimayuga then followed it with victories over IIEE National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez, Candidate Master Genghis Imperial, Engr. Michael Suacillo and Noel Jay Estacio.
“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in IIEE and IECEP joined the tournament," said Elpedes, a former varsity chess player of the multi-titled Rizal Technological University, Mandaluyong City.
Suacillo and Imperial occupied the second to third spots with 4.0 points each.
Unheralded Fabian Elago upset reigning back-to-back Asian Senior 65 over category champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad in the final round to catch up with Vincent Ryu Dimayuga.
Dimayuga and Elago finished the tournament with similar 3.5 points; Engr. Evaristo Tizon Jr., Estacio, Arena FIDE Master Seth Heherson Flores, De Leon, Dubai based Engr. Danny Reyes and Joseph Richard Sajugla have identical 3.0 points.
Earlier, Philippine Sports Expo (PSE) President Michael Herrera and 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., made the ceremonial moves kicking off the one-day tournament, also graced by Philippines Society of Mechanical Engineer (PSME) foundation president Engr. Roger Reyes, IIEE Branding Chairman Menandro Lim , IM Bagamasbad, Dubai-based entrepreneur/engr. Danilo "Danny" Reyes, Mr. Archimedes De Leon, Mam Katherine Joyce Tablao of Smart Option/3M, Mr. Gary Arriola, lead vocalist of the band the Boyfriends, US based Mr. Jessie Villasin, IIEE Pampanga Former President Engr. Giovanni Aquino, Engr. Alvarez, eventual champion Elpedes, Brian Angelo Young (son of IM Angelo Young) and live sketch portrait expert KC De Guzman.
The event is organized by IIEE Pampanga chapter in partnership with IIEE Branding and Promotion led by their advisers Former national presidents Allan Alvarez and Feliciano Padua, Chairman Menandro Lim, Vice Chairman Ervin Fernandez and with venue host represented by Roseller Balanza for Savers Industrial and Building Solutions.-Marlon Bernardino-
