Manila---GM elect and International Master Daniel Maravilla Quizon shoots for outright GM title and history to become 1st ever Filipino World Junior Chess Champion in the ongoing FIDE World Junior Chess Championships 2024 that is being held at Raddison Gift City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The pride of Dasmarinas City, Cavite has so far tallied 7 points on account of 5 wins and 4 draws in nine outings.

He is currently tied for 1st in the company of his 10th round opponent IM Kazybek Nogerbek of Kazakhstan, IM Rudik Makarian of Russia, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso of Colombia and GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia.

The world junior stint of Quizon is being supported by Kamatyas Chess Club headed by NM David Almirol and IM Roderick Riataza Nava.

Quizon, one of the top players of the star studded Dasmarinas Chess Academy under the guidance of mayor Jenny Barzaga, the late congressman Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga and national coach FM Roel Roel Alcana Abelgas, needs to raise his FIDE rating from 2448 to 2500 to complete this GM Title status. Quizon has already achieved the 3 GM norms requirement. However, if Quizon wins the World Junior crown, as FIDE rules dictate, he will get an outright GM title.

He beat Rafael Sharon of Zambia (Round 1), CM Joe Anderson Ang Ern of Malaysia (Round 3), IM Aswath of India (Round 5), GM Gleb Dudin of Hungary (Round 7) and GM Artiom Stribuk of Russia (Round 9). He drew with IM Ramesh Avinash of India (Round 2), AFM Harshit Pawar of India (Round 4), GM Aleksey Grebnev of Russia (Round 6), and GM Aditya Samant of India (Round 8). -Marlon Bernardino-
