MANILA---PH chess wizards Woman National Master Antonella Berthe "Tonelle" Murillo Racasa is set to compete in the GMG Youth (15 years old and below) FIDE Rapid Chess Tournament on Saturday, May 20, 2023, 9 am at the 2nd floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.

"I hope to do well in this prestigious event (GMG Youth FIDE Rapid Chess Tournament)," said Racasa, the pride of Mandaluyong City, whose participation in international tournaments is supported by Hotel Sogo and ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard A. Cabangon.

The 15-year-old Racasa, a student of Victory Christian International School, aims to raise her rapid rating of 1509 to more than 1800.

It shall be recalled that Racasa, the 2020 Philippine Sportswriters Association Tony Siddayao awardee, scored several upsets and was among the leaders two rounds before the end until fatigue overtook her, causing Racasa to fall in the last two rounds during the World Cadet Championship U-12 in Weifang, Shandong, China last Aug. 21–Sept. 1, 2019.

Expected to give Racasa a run for her money are the country's newest Fide Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca, National Master Oshrie Jhames Reyes, National Master Al-Basher "Basty" Buto and Woman National Master Jersey Marticio.

Sponsored by Thailand based National Master Coach Gerald Ferriol, in close cooperation with Balinas Family, Mam China Aurelio and Mam Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen Foodhall and Mr. Richard Poblete-Ramos of Eurobake Restaurant - Bakeshop, the one-day chessfest, which aims to boost the sport grassroots development program, will follow a seven rounds Swiss system format with 10 minutes plus five minutes increment playing time.

Approximately, more than 100 woodpushers from the Metropolis and nearby provinces are expected by the organizers (Bayanihan Chess Club) to rub elbows and match wits for this one-day tournament, which is rated by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by chairman/president Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr.

The champion will go home P5,000-richer with the second, third, fourth and fifth placers out to receive P3,000, P2,000, P1,500 and P1,000 each. Sixth to 10th placers will pocket P500 each, while the top 14 years old and below (boys and Girls), top 12 years old and below (boys and Girls), top 10 years old and below (boys and Girls), and top 8 years old and below (boys and Girls), will earn P500 each.

The registration fee is worth P500. If you’re interested, please send GCash to Jolina Icao at 09613396015 or 09684367842.– Marlon Bernardino-
