NM OJ Reyes to grace Tarlac Youth chess event

MANILA---National Master (NM) Oshrie Jhames "OJ" Constantino Reyes of Dila-Dila Santa Rita, Pampanga will make an appearance as the guest speaker in the formal opening of the 1st Youth Chess Team Tournament 2023 on Sunday, April 2 at the City Mall San Rafael, Tarlac City.

The 11-year-old Reyes, recipient of the Most Outstanding Kapampangan Award 2022 in the field of sport, is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play the sport.

He may also share his secrets of his rise as one of the country's top players.

It shall be recalled that Reyes won the National Age Group Chess Championship in three straight years (2020 National Age Group-Under 10, 2021 National Age Group-Under 10 and 2022 National Age Group -Under 12).

Reyes also won an individual gold medal in Board 2 during the ASIAN Nations Cup, Online Chess Championship Team Tournament Under 14 last March 25-27,2022.

He spearheaded Team Philippines in an over-all runner-up finish in the Team Event together with NM Al-Basher Buto, Phil Martin Casiguran and Pat Ferdolf Macabulos.

Tarlac City Chess Club Inc. president Henry Calacday, who organized the chess tournament, said Reyes was the perfect choice as guest speaker. “Most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol,” Calacday said.

Events on tap are the elementary and high school divisions.
