Danny Garcia vs David Benavidez (Fight Analysis)

Tonight former two division world champion Danny Garcia (36-3, 21KOs) takes on Jose Benavidez, Jr (27-1-1, 18KOs) in a junior middleweight bout at Barclays Center from Brooklyn, New York. If the final press conference is an indication of what the fight will be between these two, then the fight fans are in for a real treat!
As usual it was Danny Garcia’s father and trainer, Angel Garcia, that did a lot of the trash talking, which was very entertaining. One would think it was Angel Garcia fighting Benavidez instead of Danny. Angel downplayed Benavidez’s stellar amateur career and bluntly stated that Benavidez had no (boxing) skills in the ring. Benavidez replied that his son Danny lost to (Shawn) Porter and basically dismissed Porter’s skills. Angel Garcia and Jose Benavidez went back and forth taking verbal shots at one another which was actually very entertaining. The two appear to genuinely dislike each other. It did seem as though Angel Garcia got underneath Jose Benavidez, Jr.'s skin. However, the two did a great job of selling tonight’s Pay Per View (PPV) card which has an excellent undercard of supporting fighters.
Earlier in the press conference, Danny Garcia simply thanked those in attendance and talked about how he felt good physically now that he will be fighting at junior middleweight (154lbs) and looked forward to winning a 3rd world title. During the Friday weighin before the fight, both fighters looked in shape for tonight’s contest, but Danny Garcia, the shorter fighter, appeared to be bulkier and stronger than Benavidez. So at the sound of the opening bell for tonight’s main event between these two fighters what must each do to secure victory.
What must Benavidez do?
Benavidez must take control of his emotions and forget about the trash talking of Angel Garcia so that does not make him lose his focus for the fight. Benavidez has to use a good jab to set up his shots and to use good combinations. At the outset of the fight he must make the smaller but bulkier man (Danny Garcia) respect his power. Benavidez must not get careless by trying to brawl with, the likely stronger, Garcia because this will leave him open to Garcia’s shots that could knock him out or gradually wear him down for a late round stoppage. Benavidez must have good foot work. Based on what Angel said at the final press fight conference about Benavidez not having any boxing skills, Benavidez must prove Angel wrong and impose his will and boxing skill on Danny Garcia by being one step ahead of him. The blueprint to defeat Danny Garcia was laid out by Spence, Thurman, and Porter. Ultimately, it’s to outbox and outsmart Danny Garcia from the sound of the first bell to the last bell.
What must Garcia do to defeat Benavidez?
Danny Garcia is looking to make a statement. He says the 19 months away from the sport of boxing has had a good effect on him and he still trained. He says he feels stronger at 154lbs pounds coming up from 140 and 147 lbs. Danny too has to impose his will on Benavidez. It appears that (based on Angel Garcia saying that Benavidez has no skill) Danny may try to walk him down while systematically trying to brake him down and gain a knockout victory. If Danny is having success landing punches, Benavidez may revert to boxer and use defensive skills. Then Danny will have to cut off the ring to catch the elusive fighter. Ultimately what will determine the winner of this fight is which fighter is able to execute their game plan and who is not able to execute year game plan.
This writer picks Jose Benavidez Jr. winner by majority decision.
Boxing Notes
During a recent interview WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo again stated he wants to fight David Benavidez Jr. When Jermall signs the contract the fans will believe his statement…It’s been 3 months since Spence and Crawford have been negotiating a superfight and as of the writing of this article No OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT of when the two will fight. Reports are that both fighters want the fight but also want astronomical guaranteed purses. The “Powers that be” say they are confident that the fight will get signed. The question is when? Ryan Garcia vs Tank Davis would be a great fight for boxing. Let’s hope both fighters can convince their promoters to work out a deal to give the fans the fight…
