Laguna sweeps Tacloban and Pagadian in PCAP online chess tourney

MANILA---The Laguna Heroes extended their winning streak in the ongoing 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

Laguna continued to roll and earned another game-day sweep after demolishing Tacloban, 15.5-5.5, and Pagadian, 18-3 to climb to 14-7 slate.

"Team effort pulled us through these two matches,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Engr. Antonio Balinas of AC Balinas Construction and Steel Works.

Laguna settled for a 3.5-3.5 draw with Tacloban in blitz game, with full points from two-time Asian junior champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr (Board 1), import Woman International Master Ummi Fisabilillahh of Indonesia (Board 3), Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo (Board 6) and draws by Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Board 4).

Laguna defeated Tacloban in rapid event, 12-2, with two pointers from Barcenilla (Board 1), Richie Jocson (Board 2), Fisabilillahh (Board 3), Bagamasbad (Board 4), Lorenzo (Board 6) and Christian Nanola (Board 7).

Against Pagadian, Laguna got a 6-1 win in blitz game on victories by Barcenilla (Board 1), Lorenzo (Board 2), Fisabilillahh (Board 3), Bagamasbad (Board 4), Nanola (Board 5) and Orozco (Board 7).
The Heroes cruised to a 12-2 triumph against Pagadian in the rapid event with two points each from Lorenzo (Board 2), Fisabilillahh (Board 3), Bagamasbad (Board 4), Nanola (Board 5), Jocson (Board 6) and Orozco (Board 7).-Marlon Bernardino-
